I use it all the time and so does Sakha. She video chats with her sister and mom almost every night...it's free to use PC-to-PC so we save a ton of cash on phone cards and stuff. Plus, they get to see each other which is always cool. Been watching my little nephew grow up daily over Skype, actually.

Now that Microsoft is going to buy it I expect it to go to shit pretty fast. The day that Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck is the day they make a vacuum.

You're right TB, I've just installed it - had a great transatlanic conversation for absolutely nothing (first time I 've used it).

  I'm still way behind you.  I've never used Skype.  It could be because I have no excuse to activate an account.

You could use it for all your computer to computer phone calls, Purelife. Not paying anything is the best incentive of all.

Do you need to buy a mic?  I have a webcam and the software on a laptop but I think it's because I know no one to call.

I thought I'd have to, but without a mic you can just type anything in - like an instant messenger, however with a mic is by far the best. If you've just got a webcam I suppose you could use sign-language. lol. I just went through my address bookm and emailed everyone if I could reach them via Skype, and several came up.

Most (but not all) webcams have a mic built in (as do a lot of laptops), but like Gopher said, you can still use it without a mic. The video calling is really the best feature and you'd want some kind of mic for that.

It's free for PC-to PC calls, voice, IM, and video. You can pay a small bit to do PC-to-landline calls so you can call any phone anywhere with it. I got a $20 box that interfaces my cordless phone to to Skype so I can use it on a PC-to-PC call and I like it a lot. Very, very handy.

The first time I was going to get on Skype with Sakha I couldn't tell if it was working or not (I had just bought my webcam)...I was kind of desperate to make sure it was working right and Lise was kind enough to Skype to me so I could see that it was all set. And the rest, as they say, was history.

   Never did use it. Considered it once or twice though.
