Oh I really don't know what a artsy movie is for people in this thread, I see classic(s) named beside Hoollywood entertainment now.

I retract what I posted, since it's not clear what we're talking about.

I'm in it for the story.  If they want to make me GUESS what the story is about, I'm not interested.

Hey, I just noticed.... thanks to Michel, PC has hit the 1,000 mark! Congrats, girl.

Artsy-fartsy. Well, excuse me but I thought Chariots of Fire was wonderful. Ben Cross was divine in that - I actually had a crush on him after watching the movie. Y'know, the British gentleman with accent. Teh melts.

Lost in Translation is my choice. I liked it, thought the humor was subtle and great. Hubby didn't think much of it. Actually he doesn't think much or artsy-fartsy movies.

I vote for Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2.

  Ye gods.....

Art movies, huh? I don't really know too many, but here's a small list of Asian ones that I enjoyed:

Tokyo Story (1953) [old people will like this film... and I use the term 'old' loosely ;) + is the best one out of the list
Sonatine (1993)
Hana-bi (1997)
Last Life in the Universe (2003)
A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)
Sympathy For Lady Vengeance (2005)  .. hmm maybe not quite

I too nominate Kill Bill 1 & 2 for worst art film.

Lise

Hmmm.... I've never heard of any of the movies you mentioned, Marik. Boy, you must really be into Japanese/Korean/Chinese flicks.

Here's another one of my favorite, The Crying Game. I still can't believe he fell for that she-male!! UGH!!!!!!!

yeah Lise it's easier to start off with a type of movie (Asian) that doesn't have too many movies to watch. I look at the Hollywood list and I'm overwhelmed.. don't really know where to start. Of course I'll watch new releases that hit theatre here, like Rush Hour 3 / Superbad.

I think people here would like Tokyo Story though. No violence, great acting, simple but effective plot (parents travel to the city to visit their kids, but the kids are busy with their own lives). Only problem is it that it's in Japanese, so you'll have to read subtitles. Recommended to all.

Lise

Right. I'll keep an eye out for Tokyo Story when I get the chance. Looks interesting.

It sounds a little bit like Che ora é (what time is it if I translate) from Ettore Scola with Mastroiani. Sad.

Makes me think of the numerous times I've been to art galleries and made my first object the reading of the title of some painting or other - before standing back to look at it and see why it was so called.
