A new saliva test from McGill University Health Center could [a href="vny!://www.muhc.ca/media/news/item/?item_id=100301"]detect HIV infection in as little as 20 minutes[/a].
The test, developed by Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, is based on a method called immunochromatography and was used on 1,222 mothers in a labor ward in India using both saliva and blood samples. The results from both types of tests corresponded. The test screens for all subtypes of HIV-1 and HIV-2. These tests could become highly useful for vulnerable or at-risk people who are not always given adequate medical follow-up or who don't have coverage enabling them to have regular testing done.
