I have thought for awhile this would be a GREAT way to end support for the war: if we were asked to pay for it, rather than putting it on the backs of our children and grandchildren. Bring it on, I say!

Paying The Costs Of The Iraq Occupation - And Stopping It

Here's an idea for an "incentive-based" solution to paying the costs - human and financial - of the ongoing occupation of Iraq. If the COSTS of the occupation were actually being paid by the public-at-large -instead of borrowing the money and making our kids pay it off- it would end tomorrow.

1) A huge-ass whopping tax on everyone to pay the costs of the occupation. This comes to about $8500 for each family of four so far, not counting upcoming costs like replacement of equipment, medical care for the wounded, the cost of eventually bringing them home, etc.

2) Any family that actually sends someone to fight in the war does not have to pay the tax.

This is an opportunity for Bush supporters to -for the first time- do more than put "support the troops" stickers on their SUVs.

The real trouble with reality is that there's no background music.

Yeah but what if some people can't afford to pay $8500 or whatever it works out to? If a family has kids, and say their kid got into university, they now have to go fight because their parents can't afford to pay, etc etc etc. I don't think this idea will work; but they could make it so that people whose income is greater than a certain amount have to pay this Iraq-tax (and then a bunch of people will want to leave the country thinking they'll have to pay for these sort of things again in the future...)

I wish it was that easy though.

I say anyone who voted republican should pay for the war. lol would opinion among the right change in a heart beat.

I always tell the war mongering teens I know and run into that they love war so much they should sign up themselves. But oh they shut up after that.

LOL. I love the concept. And if modified somehow along the lines Marik suggests (greater income = a greater share of the cost) I would support it. Especially if you levied the tax on corporations as well (they would pay a much larger portion, of course, than the average citizen). After all, many would argue that America's imperialist ventures are undertaken for the benefit of corporate interests, so why shouldn't they pay?

It would never work, but I love the idea.

We're putting the entire war on our credit card, yes, and our culture has become so short-sighted financially that this seems like an acceptable option. We do it in our own lives, so why not on the macro scale? Wheeee.
For thou art with me; thy cream and thy sugar they comfort me
Thou preparest a carafe before me in the presence of Juan Valdez
Thou anointest my day with pep; my mug runneth over
Surely richness and taste shall follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell in the house of coffee forever.
