Was just having a little read on the site......

  [A name=faqTwo][!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="faqQ2" --]When should I apply?[!-- InstanceEndEditable --][/A]

[!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="faqA2" --]You should apply for residence when you apply for admission to Malaspina.

Acceptance to Malaspina does not necessarily mean that you will be accepted in housing.

Do you have to maintain a certain GPA to maintain your acceptance in the college?  I think that students outside the area have different requirements than ones who are Canadians.

Sort of, here's what I found when I was searching for places in Canada. You'd go to the international student link. The requirements for all international students is basically to have high TOFELS or something in English and have a B in grade 12 English. But all the other schools had a 'but if you are american we want this this and this'. So its like a double standard if you will.

Malaspina treats everyone who is not from Canada as an international student. So there's no double standard. All they wanted was that I know english and got a B or C in Grade 12 english and I got an 88% B+. So I met the requirements.

For US schools they want people with above 3.0 top of the class, 21-28 on their ACT.

I don't have have a GPA, got my diploma through internet correspondance, a 16 on the ACT (i got an 18 but the ACT people 'lost' it).

So I don't have a lot going for me if you look at my transcript. If I were to guess my GPA's I had a 2.8 at the first high school, 2.5 at the second and a 3.5 at the third. My true GPA or what I'm capable is between 3.0-3.5. Problem with high school was that I never was motivated, except for science, history/geography, art, and english. My weak point is Math. I'm dumb at math.

And sure enough the ACT tests math not your history skills.

I mean I went 2 years in history/geography class getting above 100% on tests. I think my sophmore year my History grade was 120%. (did a bunch of extra credit on tests) I wrote a 7 page essay during a test on Animal Farm in History class freshman year. lol

My teacher told me I had to quit writing it was 3:30 class ended at 3pm and I would be late for football practise. lol

I'll do better in college because I can focus on what my strength's are.

[/DIV]Do you know what courses are required for first year studies to get your degree in Urban Planning?

Sportsdude

for student loans we'll have to go through a private student loan. I'm not covered by the US loan system.

But I've got enough money on my own for a semester right now. So my parents and I are coming up with a plan where I pay half and they pay half.  The cost is low enough to the point that, that scenario can work out.

Today I'm going to apply for this UPS job that pays 10 bucks an hour on top of the money I make throwing papers which is somewhere around 1,600 a month if I work everyday which I'll start doing again. The UPS job would pay 800 a month. So this is do able.

(I've been working part time for a year so I could finish my high school work).

Cool.  Sounds like you've got your bases covered.  You're going for the Fall semester?

Sportsdude

Yup. Funny, the letter says August 30 the semester 'commences' but a person I know that goes there was like 'its always after labour day' lol.

Its funny. When I first read I got in, I guess it didn't really hit me, now I'm super excited. lol

Okay so I printed out the housing form, and first semester payment form that's due before June 1st. Then they'll send me a class list and I pick my classes. lol

And somewhere between now and August I've got to tour the place. lol

  fun!

There's three options in the Geography field at Malaspina

Natural Resource Management

Urban Growth Management

General stream

I'm doing the Urban Growth because that's the eventual urban planning career path. My studies won't be named 'urban planning' until masters time. Then I get that urban planning label I'm striving for.

My goal is to get really good grades to where I can get accepted into UBC's Urban Planning Masters degree. They're really really really good. It'll be tough but I think I can do it.

lol, they have a link at UBC to area urban planning jobs and the two that caught my eye was the head director of urban planning for Surrey and New Westminster lol.

I keep joking with my friends I want to 'build cities in my image' lol, being a director would basically be that. lol hehe

I'm more into transportation urban planning. Like I have ideas about getting people out of there cars and on transit etc.

I envy Europe and Japan with there massive metro systems and high speed rail links.

You can actually do the application right online SD.  If I were you, this is one thing I wouldn't put off.

I attended Malaspina way back in 84, then SFU till 87, then U Vic in 96 for an M. Ed.

Malaspina was the kicker though- small classes, interesting subjects, great instructors. Always remember going for a beer at the Six Mile after PoliSci classes with the instructor.

Malaspina is a great insurance against dropping out at the larger University- gets you in the heavy duty study mode.

Now I sail around San Francisco Bay on my 57 foot schooner.

Good Luck at Malaspina, enjoy and study hard.
