Why does anyone (except racist scumbags) care who marries who?

NEW YORK (AP) - The charisma king of the 2008 presidential field. The world's best golfer. The captain of the New York Yankees. Besides superstardom, Barack Obama, Tiger Woods and Derek Jeter have another common bond: Each is the child of an interracial marriage.

For most of U.S. history, in most communities, such unions were taboo.
<snip>
But what once seemed so radical to many Americans is now commonplace.
<snip>
Opinion polls show overwhelming popular support, especially among younger people, for interracial marriage.

That's not to say acceptance has been universal. Interviews with interracial couples from around the country reveal varied challenges, and opposition has lingered in some quarters.

The real trouble with reality is that there's no background music.

Good for mixed marriages. I'm all for that. But it is very tough though. Not only have you go to deal with a different male species altogether, you carry with you a different set of cultural values. In the end, two cultures can make it work. It takes more effort and more work but the end end product is something rich and more rewarding.
Always end the name of your child with a vowel, so that when you yell the name will carry.

Its still the last taboo.
Look on tv, it's just mainly white faces. Heck they even had their own channel the WB, or white people with problems channel.

Rest of the world interracial couples are the norm on tv, but here its considered 'edgy'.
Considering it was illegal in most southern states up til the 70's to marry another person of a different race, its going to take a while. Especially in this country.

So I was watching this documentary, and a Chinese lady + German guy was getting married. The Chinese lady said something along the lines of, "It shouldn't matter who you marry; love is still love regardless of ethnic background."
 And I thought, good for her. Someone who has it right.

 Then another time, I was watching this Japanese program where a guy was asking people what they thought about interracial marriages. Mixed response, but the old people (40+) made me embarrased to be half-Japanese!! They'd all say something like, "Keep our race clean! No dirty blood!"
I had to shake my head when I saw this... at least the young people were more open-minded...

*I might have posted this before.. I forget now..*

You're 1/2 Japanese, Marik?  Please register so I can bless thee.

Well it depends on where you live too though in the US...I see tons of mixed relationships where I live(Houston) because the city is almost evenly split between the three largest groups which are whites, hispanics, and blacks. As for being mostly white faces on TV the same is true. In fact about a third of publicly broadcasted channels here are in Spanish language.

Marik

lol Lil Me are you a halfie too?

I'll be in a mixed-marriage before long  and in my case I don't think this will be much of an issue. I totally respect my fiance's culture, and for me, the differences are refreshing.
