Nanaimo ([A title=Help:Pronunciation href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Pronunciation"]pronounced[/A] [SPAN class=IPA title="Pronunciation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)"][FONT face="Arial Unicode MS"]/nəˈnaɪmoʊ/[/FONT][/SPAN]) (pop. 79,000), is the second largest city on [A title="Vancouver Island" href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver_Island"]Vancouver Island[/A] in [A title="British Columbia" href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Columbia"]British Columbia[/A], [A title=Canada href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada"]Canada[/A]. It has been dubbed the "Bathtub Racing Capital of the World" and "Harbour City". Nanaimo is also sometimes referred to as the "Hub City" because of its central location on Vancouver Island and due to the layout of the downtown streets which form a "hub" pattern. It is also fondly known as the "Hub, Tub, and Pub City" because of its large population of drunk dancing girls, association with the [A title="Bathtub racing" href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathtub_racing"]bathtub racing[/A] and the numerous "watering holes" in Old Nanaimo. It is the seat of the [A class=mw-redirect title="Regional District of Nanaimo, British Columbia" href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_District_of_Nanaimo%2C_British_Columbia"]Regional District of Nanaimo[/A].
