Celine maybe more popular in the states, but they'll still use her as a cultural joke, they have since the titanic.
Me: i'm moving to Canada
anybody: "oh really, so does that mean you'll start listening to Celine Dion albums?"
Me: why? you're an idiot
anybody: "Because she's all Canadians listen to you know, she's the most famous person ever to come out of Canada! You know that backward country where they eat whale blubber and they live in igloos and prance around in red suits on a horse"
Me: "get out of your small little world every now and again" *walks home*

i get this every time I go back. Except its now "how can it be so warm up there, you're further north then us, that's not possible!"

or the new one is "so you're actually going to stay up there? You aren't going to ditch your american citizenship are you?"
I always say "maybe" and everyone looks like they've seen a ghost.

Its Celine, because of her, everyone makes fun of canadians outside of canada. Plus her songs seem to follow me where ever I go.

Ohhhhh, I see.  Surely you're not implying that Americans are imbeciles?  So when you say 'everybody/anybody'... you really mean a small percentage of idiots.  I can't even imagine that comment reflects the general perception of Canada by Americans.  Do you really think coming to any form of conclusion (let alone quoting them) should be based on the uneducated rantings of a moron?

no, but i seem to run into them all, I wish I didn't. Even in the Pacific Northwest, when I was in Seattle, the student media there had a show on the television station just making fun of Canadians. I asked why all the hate for the Canadians, they couldn't give an answer.

I keep forgetting to change to american spelling when I'm writing emails and such to some people back home, I get flamed for disrespecting my roots. I always reply "what roots?" but that doesn't seem to go well with them. lol

my childhood friend who's been my friend since I was 5, thinks I hate america and what not. (I don't believe in the America that we were taught to believe in and fight for as kids, for example the "American Dream" that causes millions to come here every year, is a sham. The idea that you can make something of yourself only in America, isn't true. Then the idea that America is the greatest country in human history, (disagree) American ideals are based off of the French, America just wants to take credit for coming up with Liberty and Freedom and so on) Everyone seems to think that because I left (turning my back on America, since it gave me everything), means now then hate everyone. gosh so much hate going around. yeesh.

Which is completely false. I don't hate America. In fact I miss it, I've always felt that I was pushed. I've always respected Canada and I wanted to live in another country. 4 places in the U.S. I could live in Seattle, SF, Portland. I got tired of people critizing me for saying I was too European in thinking. It was constant, everyday saying "be American." no I don't want to conform.

It's hard to explain what goes on. Best example in Canada would be a diehard French family's only son going off and marrying an "anglo" girl.
