[!-- dateline --]LOS ANGELES [!-- /dateline --]-- First he went on national television to apologize for his racial tirade against two black hecklers. Now Michael Richards is taking his contriteness to the next level: he's hired a public relations expert with deep contacts in the black community.

New York publicist Howard Rubenstein took on Richards as a client Wednesday after being contacted by the actor-comedian. He then arranged for Richards to call the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

"I've known those gentlemen for many years," Rubenstein told The Associated Press.

"Michael apologized profusely. He wants to heal the tremendous wound that he's inflicted on the American public, and on the African-American community," he said.

Jackson, reached by phone, said Richards called "expressing his remorse and his confusion."

"He's embarrassed. He got caught on tape. That's a big part of his anxiety now," said Jackson.

"Clearly he needs some race sensibility training, and some psychiatric help. His anger is volatile and dangerous to himself and others," Jackson said. "I hope he gets the help he needs. But the culture that's producing this kind of animosity toward blacks must be addressed. ... We're increasingly facing cultural isolation in Hollywood, in the movies and in TV."

Jackson added, "We have to evaluate the use of the n-word and categorize it as hate speech, no matter who uses it."

Calls to Sharpton's home and to his National Action Network on Wednesday were not returned.

Richards, who played the kooky neighbor Kramer on the TV show "Seinfeld," lashed out at the hecklers last week during a performance at West Hollywood's Laugh Factory. A video of his rant then appeared on TMZ.com.

In a subsequent satellite appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show," Richards said his remarks were fueled by anger, not bigotry.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said in a statement Wednesday that the tirade and anti-Semitic comments by Mel Gibson earlier this year point to a pervasive trend in American culture, and that Richards' declaration "is indicative of the type of denial that too often accompanies racist rhetoric."

Rubenstein, whose media relations firm specializes in "crisis management" according to the firm's Web site, said he had never met or spoken to Richards before the actor called him.

Clients of Rubenstein's firm include Amazon.com, the New York Yankees, ABC Inc., Walt Disney Co., Time Inc., News Corp., Columbia University, the NAACP Image Awards and Bloomberg L.P., according to the Web site.

"I've been very involved in the African-American community for 25 to 30 years," Rubenstein said. "It would be a tragedy if this exacerbated our race relations. I hope I can help. ... It's always been an effort on my part to improve African-American and Jewish ethnic relations."

As for reports that Richards shouted out anti-Semitic remarks during another standup comedy routine in April, Rubenstein confirmed his client did, but that he was only role-playing.

"He's Jewish. He's not anti-Semitic at all. He was role-playing, he was playing a part. He did use inappropriate language, but he doesn't have any anti-Semitic feelings whatsoever," Rubenstein said

How can you apologise for something like this ?  Wouldn't you just be saying that you're sorry you exposed an ugly side to the public. He can apologise for saying racist things, but that won't make him any less a racist.  No ???

Could be. I guess we don't know who he really is until you've met him in person. It's hard to say. Nevertheless, you don't just loose your head like that in public so yeah... he could be racist for all you know.

It's too late for Michael Richards now. He'll forever be branded as a racist no matter how sincere his apology is.

I'm still waiting for him to say I'm an alcoholic and I'm going to rehab.

I wanted to put something but I wont in case Im taken the wrong way lol.

He's toast. I agree with Lise hes finished as he will always be remembered for this now, Seinfeld will take a backseat from now on. All he can hope for now is to make a somewhat decent appology and to fade into oblivion with some sort of fan base. He wont get anymore chances to be in comedy shows anymore thats for sure.

Ha! To be honest I am afraid to state my opinion with politics and racial issues in person even as I find it only causes hard feelings whenever it comes up amongst my friends and myself. Everyone of us has different backgrounds with race and upbringing/ background so it seems to have deep divisions.

But I DID put something! I conquered my fears, hooRAH!

  Hows today treating you PC?

Its such a wierd ending to a career. He was such a character to be remembered (Cosmo), and I guess that is all she wrote.

His racist comments will bring no acceptance of his apology. I recommend he go hide somehwere and live the rest of his life quietly.

Jolly Green Giants

I am sure he is basically a much, much more decent person than those two a**holes who were taunting him, and who are most probably more racist than he himself is, but are clever enough not to show it but keep it between themselves (until a real victim shows up of course).

It's perfectly possible he was trying to taunt them to get back at them. They were cowards after all who were using their advantageous position (them in the dark part of the room, hidden among the public, and him alone up in the limelights, trying to put on a show). It's a sad fact however that Joe Public will interpret this (or has been taught to interpret this) as simply pure "racism", while it's well known that you can get almost anyone to lose his temper and say things he wouldn't dream of saying in other circumstances.

I would classify what they did as something motivated by hate, as obviously they wanted to "get at him", and quite possibly they fully intended to ruin his career. It's a bit difficult to call it a "hate crime", but it's a kind of a minor degree of hate crime.

JGG

Well ... "the name you submitted can't be used, as it contains a reserved word."

Which means that someone swiftly set the forum software up to consider one of the three words Jolly, Green, or Giant, as "reserved". Which means I can't use my nick anymore.

But as you will get used to by now, it doesn't matter.

What would you do, seeing your career being ruined ?
Isn't hiring PR reps to save your public image something rather ordinary in the US ?

He isn't able to hire an army of lawyers, anyway.

Isn't this just another instance of the kind of hypocrisy which is rampant much more on DS than on DV ?
