I think it all came about because its an old chinese custom to serve ginger, pigs feet and egg cooked together in vinegar to visitors after a birth.  Red egg (hard boiled, shell deeped in red dye)........I think the chinese make everthing red for all happy ocasions (white for death)

ADD...the new mother is given the cooked ginger and vinegar the first month after giving birth, to help her recover.  Recently western researchers reported there is truth in this belief[/DIV]
     Hi 49er!

That's interesting. I don't think we did this last year. I did give a baby introduction to friends but we never held a Chinese banquet. I certainly did not remember getting any eggs or ginger. My mom wants me to boil an egg each year for the kids b'day and dye it red but I dunno... never done it.

  Hay it's almost Lunch time!

Lise

LOL. It's past my lunchtime, Lazy.

Yeah, white means 'death' in Chinese culture so I would avoid giving anything white to a Chinese person for his/her b'day or any special event.

We went to watch Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix despite my reservations about the film. Well, after all that review by purelife, I went in knowing the movie would sucked and yeah, it did. Twas the worst of all the Potter movies. I think the book was much more exciting. They could have drawn on the character development there. Oh well. I guess you can't fit everything from the book into the movie.

I had a McGrill Chicken Wrap. Unbelievable but I think I may have found something I can stomach from McD afterall.

*marks down not to give something white at a wedding*

Yeah the only way to do the 'big books' 4-7 justice is to split them up into two movies. How they left out the locket in Grimmauld Place shows they're completely clueless.

Very true. I'm not going to talk about the movie, SD just in case someone wants to watch it later. Meh. I want my money back!!

What a beautiful BC Day. I'm going to head out in a moment and walk the little guy. So hot today... I can't believe it's cold where you're at. Just imagine in a few more days, you get to come here and experience all this lovely warm weather.

lol Lise. Its cold in the house. Outside its dangerous to be out. 40 C. The cat stayed out all day and he looks super tired. Humans are only suppose to be out 15min's in this weather. Real feel its 43 C.

no fun.

Have a great BC Day evening.

Your cat's not going to miss you? Oh, that's so sad. I guess they won't allow pets in the college.

Good evening everyone.  I'm enjoying my long weekend.  We went to Buntzen Lake yesterday and played in the lake.  It was really relaxing and the best thing evar!  (relaxing and having fun, that is)

I've got bbq ribs and corn cooking for dinner.  I'm starving!

Hope everyone else had a wonderful weekend.

Lise, I agree, HP was rather disappointing.  I'll just rent the DVD's from now on.

.............Chinese mothers have traditionally been expected to rest indoors for one full month after giving birth.  This helped ensure they didn't become overtired, or contract any germs or illnesses from the outside world that could prove dangerous in their weakened state. Besides resting, they drank a nutritious broth made with pig's feet, eggs, vinegar and ginger. Many new mothers still follow this ritual today.
