I guess you're right, purelife. That's the thing with the internet, the freedom of speech can be abused at every corner.

  It's still NOT right to NOT do anything. Call me a prune but when you write something about child pornography, you draw the line. What you can do as a administrator is submit the IP address to the various sites or contact the RCMP as soon as possible. They have the means to look into this matter.

  Anyways, I'm just glad that thread is gone. It was kinda disturbing to see it so early in the morning.

I was kind of shocked to see it left for quite some time even when the Admins were logged on.  Yeah, I'm glad that that was deleted.

  I do hope that the police could do something about it.  But, I know that they have so many other major cases to work on.

Tracking an IP down to a street address (and even a particular PC) isn't all that hard, but proving in a court of law who was at the keyboard at the time is an entirely different matter.

As far as dynamic IP addresses, I don't think that's going to help if the courts get involved since your ISP will have a record of who was using X IP at Y time.

That adds another wrinkle, but the [a href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address"]MAC addresses[/a] are unique for all intents and pruposes. So, dozens or even hundreds of people working at Boeing (and I use the term loosely) can all appear to be coming from the same IP. If you ban one, you ban them all. The MAC address, however, is what allows the traffic to "know" what particular PC to go to. Server logs often show MAC addresses, so it is possible to nail a specific bit of traffic down to a single PC if you dig deep enough.
