May I suggest a 5 minute stop at Crater Lake?  lol

I will pass your question on to Mr LM.  He used to travel in that neck of the woods.  And, before he met me- that was his type of trip- photographing rocks and wildlife.

Now we tend to do more museums, historical reinactments, etc.  The kids and I are more interested in human history than natural history...in general.

How about Watrous/Little Manitou Lake?  Qu'Appelle, Duck Lake or follow the Lous Riel trail.

It sounds like you're going to have a fantastic road trip, Michel!  :)

There's the Corn Palace in Mitchell, but that's on the other side of South Dakota.
In Idaho I'm sure you could find a Spud restaurant that just serves potatoes, up in the highlands of Idaho on I-84 I saw a place, same place I got hit by the biggest tumbleweed that ever existed.

Since you're going through the Montana route. There's the Missouri Headwaters in Logan. Then I really loved the Crow lands south of Billings. Then you could stop at the Crazy Woman Creek sign in Wyoming.

Most of my adventures I just pull over at an exit with a desolate road that leads to nothing but a mountain and keep driving.

I am not sure? I know if it was winter I would suggest Big Mountain Montana. Best ski hill in the NW USA. I really don't know the prairie areas too well except the Alberta cities. I am usually seeking out a bike trail or ski hill. Never spent much time in the area you are heading.
