A weed is any plant that grows where it's not wanted.

My whole yard is nothing but weeds, but if I removed them there wouldn't be anything left.

When you have a vegetable garden they're the last thing you want. They're very efficient at extracting all the goodies out of the soil. That's why they grow so fast.
