Hmm, I can't figure out reasons for hearing things too. There's a train that goes by every couple of hours ago miles away from here and some days you here it, others you don't.  
"We can't stop here. This is bat country."

Well I didn't live too far from the harbour in Nanaimo and at night when the ships would roll in I'd hear them every once in a while, even though they came everyday.

Was it foggy?

I just brought up the fog issue because the days where I would hear the ships start singing were days that were foggy or days I couldn't see the strait outside my window.

  Could that have been the fog horns you were hearing SD ?

Oooooh, Sooo that's what they're used for, lol.

I always thought they went off when a ship comes into harbour no matter what. lol

It's pouring again. Strange summer continues. Its not suppose to rain this much.

They're to substitute lighthouses when fog makes them redundant.  I kind of like their sound....yet I'm not too crazy about fog.

Really? Every time it fogged up and fog horns were sounding I got goose bumps thinking of those maritime towns I read in children's book as a child. Then again, I never grew up around ports, so all that stuff fascinates me.
