[!-- dateline --]NEW YORK[!-- /dateline --] -- Who says politics is show business for ugly people?

"An Inconvenient Truth," Al Gore's film on the perils of global warming, scored two Oscar nominations Tuesday -- for best documentary feature and best original song.

While he is not technically a nominee -- the film's director, David Guggenheim, won the nod, as did singer Melissa Etheridge for the song "I Need to Wake Up" -- Gore said he was "thrilled" that his movie was honored.

"The film ... has brought awareness of the climate crisis to people in the United States and all over the world," Gore said in an e-mail statement. "I am so grateful to the entire team and pleased that the Academy has recognized their work. This film proves that movies really can make a difference."

Aides say the former vice president plans to walk the red carpet with Hollywood's beautiful people at the Academy Awards ceremony next month.

"An Inconvenient Truth" has been a critical and box office success, bringing in more than $24 million to make it the third highest-grossing documentary in history. A companion book has been on national best-seller lists for months.

Other films nominated for best documentary feature include "Deliver Us From Evil," about the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church; "Iraq in Fragments," about the Sunni-Shiite conflict in that country; "Jesus Camp," about a summer camp for evangelical Christians, and "My Country, My Country," about the months leading up to the January 2005 elections in Iraq.

Gore narrowly lost the 2000 presidential contest to Republican George W. Bush in a disputed election. He has said he's not planning to run for president again but also has not ruled it out.
Canada 'must act' to curb global warming: Harper
[P class=timeStamp]Updated Fri. Feb. 2 2007 11:20 PM ET

 [P class=storyAttributes]CTV.ca News Staff

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday that Canada "must act" to curb global warming after a newly released report that warns humans are "very likely" the cause of the problem.

Very likely ????  Most definitely.  When nature is out of balance, we're always behind it somewhere down the line.

"The problem is enormous. It's large, it's long-term and there are no quick fixes to this," Harper told reporters in Ottawa.

"You can't just snap your fingers and reduce Canada's energy use by one-third in the space of a couple of years."

The report, compiled by 1,200 world-renowned scientists who are part of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), says more droughts, heat waves, rains and a slow gain in sea levels could last for more than 1,000 years.

They're really not grasping the concept......we don't HAVE 1000 years to fix this.

The "very likely" involvement of humans, resulting from the burning of fossil fuels, is about a 90 per cent certainty, says the report.

The conclusion is the strongest ever, making it almost impossible for bureaucrats to blame the changes on natural forces.

"I don't think there's ever been as much pressure on governments as we're seeing right now and on humanity to change our habits," said CTV's London Bureau Chief Tom Kennedy.

Achim Steiner, head of the UN Environment Programme, said governments have no excuses left.

"February 2, 2007 may be remembered as the day the question mark was removed from whether (people) are to blame for climate change."

The question mark disappeared long before February 2, 2007 for me.....hmmm.....fancy that, I'm not even a scientist.

Harper said the only way to achieve absolute reductions was through the applications of new technologies over time.

"I don't think realistically we can tell Canadians -- stop driving your car, stop going to work, turn your heat off in the winter -- we need to adapt to new energy realities so that we can achieve emissions targets."

No...you can't tell them to stop driving their cars or stop going to work or to turn your heat off in the winter.....you CAN however, stop beating around the bush about how desperate this situation is and hope self preservation comes into play.

The report was released Friday at a climate change conference in Paris, which Environment Minister John Baird was attending, and will serve as a summary for policymakers around the world.

"We've clearly got to take action," said Baird from Paris. "I think Canadians don't want to hear what can't be done but they want to hear what action will be taken by their government and we hear that call."

Baird said the Conservatives will be moving forward on two fronts.

"The biggest action we can take is to begin to regulate industrial greenhouse gas emissions," he said. "We also want to, at the same time, deal with this huge challenge of greenhouse gassing and the immediate threat of air pollution, smog and air quality in Canada."

 Report findings

The report says the range of possible temperature increases this century is between 1.1 and 6.4 degrees Celsius -- up from the 1.8 to 5.4 degrees estimated in the panel's 2001 report.

For the first time, the report gives a "best estimate," indicating greater certainty than before, that says temperatures will rise between 1.8 to 4.0 Celsius by 2100.

If we don't start doing something about global warming NOW, we won't have to worry about 2100.

The panel also approved wording saying man-made global warming can "more likely than not" be blamed for an increase in hurricane and tropical cyclone strength since 1970.

In 2001, the same panel had said there was not enough proof to reach such a conclusion. That report also said that global warming was "likely" caused by humans.   Heavy sigh.

The latest report also projects that sea levels could rise between 18 and 59 centimetres in this century. Meanwhile, the IPCC also concluded that even higher levels remain a possibility in Antarctica and Greenland.

Wording of the new report required consensus from all countries, including the United States and oil-rich countries such as Saudi Arabia.

Some delegates told AP that Chinese officials expressed opposition to strong wording on the global warming statement.

The 1,200 scientists who directly prepared the report represent 40 different countries.

However, more than 2,300 scientists were involved in the process for the panel which is made up of 113 countries.

The Kyoto Protocol is the main plan in place to help cap emissions of greenhouse gases until 2012; however, it has been weakened by the pull out of the U.S. -- the top contributor to greenhouse gases.

ive seen this movie and the saddest thing about the whole thing was the polar bears drowning because they cant find any ice to float on.

lol on Harper.  This is the same man 4 years ago wrote that this whole thing was a 'sotgwpdt scheme'.  He's playing the winds of the polls so he can get his precious majority.

That was heartbreaking kingy. Even though they're not the only animals being affected...  I think it hits hard to see something so majestic and powerful, struggling like this.

this is what harper said before he got elected...

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper reaffirmed a past pledge Wednesday that his government would scrap the Kyoto protocol on climate change and invest the money into other initiatives.   By supporting the accord, the Liberals are throwing billions of dollars at another boondoggle, said Harper.

...

Sportsdude

yup then he got rid of all the supposedly horrible waste of money programs and then when environment went up on the worried about list he tries to bring them all back saying he came up with them. lol harpercite.

It's about friggin time we wake up and do something about the environment. Good to know that Al Gore's film is being inserted in curriculams across UK.

Great site to learn what you can do to help:

Thanks Lise.....always looking for a few more tips.

You know, I wonder why when you buy all these  new 'Energy Smart' appliances that you don't see their lesser consumption reflected in your hydro bill.  I replaced most of my appliances...they were all OLD, plus got rid of 2 ancient beer fridges a freezer, my old water heater and have killed power to the hot tub (for now).  The new appliances (3 to replace 7) were Energy Smart.  Not even a penny's difference.  When I called hydro to ask them why, I got one of their usual 'form answers' that didn't answer my question at all.  What's with that?

Hmmm I only know that the power company only cares if you put a sun panel on your roof then they pay you for the grid power.

British Columbia though needs to stop dumping human waste into the Ocean.  BC Liberals don't seem to care that they're polluting the Sound to horrible levels.

That's really weird. You should see a difference...... but it could also be that everything's jacked up these days, electric costs are skyrocketing etc. etc. etc. Still, it's better than not doing anything about it.

I've replaced all my light bulbs with those energy saver ones and saw a slight price difference but not by much. I suspect it's because my husband keeps leaving the lights on whenever and never turns them off no matter how hard I berate him for it.

We should all do what we can for the environment. I mean, it may not reflect in one's bill but at least you'll have some peace of mind.
