Morning all. Lovely day today. It isn't going to last. Rain is coming....... possibly over the weekends. Ho hum.

I made a wonderful nyonya cake yesterday, kuih talam. Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Nyonya is part of my heritage, somewhere down the line, it's possible I come from the marriage of two cultures, Malaysian and Chinese.

Anyways, so proud that I could make this cake. I thought it would be impossible but I found the ingredients and thought I'd try them out.

Kinda looks like this one here: [A href="vny!://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Market/7773/kuihtalam.html"]vny!://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Market/7773/kuihtalam.html[/A]

I don't know which impresses me more.  That you made this exotic dessert, or that you actually found Screwpine Juice.

Morning everyone.

Yes, I'm curious as to where you found pandan leaves?  At T&T?  I think that I've had those.  Those are tasty.

May I come over to have some?  ;)

Lise

Hehe. No, no, seriously I found screwpine or pandan. There's a place in Vancouver that sells it. I had to literally hunt all over the net to find this place. Cheongs or something like that. So you can imagine how estactic I was when I finally found them. I shouted 'YES!!!!' in the grocery store as I waved the leaves in the air. My husband just shook his head.

It's a pretty exotic taste but I grew up with them so I was pretty darn excited to taste this flavor again.

Nope, couldn't find it at T&T but I found these puppies at Cheong Lee Market, along with fresh turmeric roots. Still on the hunt for galangal and candlenuts.... these herbs are a tad harder to find.

Cheong's?  Is that near Nanaimo/Boundary area?  I've been there if that's the same market you're talking about.  There's a Little Caesar's there as well and it's near a corner, right?

Sportsdude

haha thats funny lise.  You sound like the best cook ever. You and P.C. should have a cook off.

Ok, that's the Cheong Lee that I've been to!  I didn't know that they sold exotic exotic ingredients.  That's nice to know.

Lise

Yep, that's the one purelife. They got them in the freezer section. I found plenty of herbs and spices in packets that I was looking for. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it was so crowded and parking was a b*tch.

The people there are super friendly though. I asked them about candlenuts and they spent like 15 mins trying to find it for me even though they didn't know what it looked like.

I don't think I can do a cook-off against PC.... not unless I want to be whipped to shame. She's a much better cook than I am.

I dunno you two sure know your stuff when it comes to cooking.  I'm hopeless when comes to cooking.  All I can do is quesadillas and thats it.

I don't think that's accurate Lise.  We cook VERY differently than each other, but I think we're BOTH adventurous cooks.
