Let the jokes begin....Seth Weiner's art project, a vehicle called [a href="vny!://interactive.usc.edu/members/naimark/archives/005507.html"]Terranaut[/a]: [em]"The vehicle conveys a fish-pilot, or Terranaut, in an aqueous vessel that is propelled by two drive wheels, each driven by its own highly efficient servomotor. The vehicle's power is stored in a bank of electrical cells that deliver energy ot the motors at 36 volts.[/em][/p] [em]The Terranaut swims safely in an aqueous vessel called the "cockpit" steering the vehicle with its movements. A camera above the cockpit tracks the movement of the Terranaut within the vessel. The Terranaut's location is then wirelessly transmitted to a remote processing station, where the data is converted into motion commands and transmitted back to the motion controller on the vehicle"[/em][/p][blockquote] [/blockquote]

LOL. You know that Like a fish needs a bicycle is a feminist line? Also a lyric in a U2 song.
"We can't stop here. This is bat country."

Yeah, I know it. To me it's a hurtful and sexist thing to say. Can you imagine the outrage that would ensue if men said something similar? I can, but no one bats an eyelash when gender-feminists* say it about men.

"A man needs a woman like a fish needs a bicycle."

Oh yeah, that would go over big, lol. It sounds so much more accepable when it's directed at men instead of women. But then men are usually the "fall-guys" for most of society's ills, real or imagined.

* I fully support and admire true feminism. I do not support gender-feminism.

I'm with you all the way on that, TehBorken.  Mind you, when I was growing up the scales were tipped the other way.  Men were free to criticize women and dismiss them as inferior beings.  Now the pendulum has swung too far the other way, but eventually people will realize that gender doesn't really matter all that much.  Then there will be true acceptance and partnership instead of competition between the sexes.  Hope I live long enough to see it.

Welll....I disagree with this. I think gender matters a lot, but not in the way most people think. It's not a thing like "men are better at X and women are better at Y", but I think society does itself a disservice by not recognizing that men and women are different and that each brings different things to the table, the same way that mother and fathers each have unique and valuable gifts (values, ideas, behaviors, etc)  to bestow upon their children.

Personally, I think we can admit to and respect the differences between the genders and still have true partnership. Unfortunately, in many cases our society is set up and structured to make men and women adversaries instead of partners.

Hope I live long enough to see it.
Me too, but I'm not holding my breath.

Sometimes my ideas run ahead of my ability to communicate.  What I meant is that gender will no longer be the only factor taken into account in work availability or opportunity for advancement in a career.  At one time women were only considered for caring and nurturing roles in the work field.  At the same time, men were mocked if they tried to enter those fields as it was considered "unmanly" to be a nurturer.  Now it is recognized that both genders are capable of interchanging roles in the work field.  Certainly each sex brings unique qualities to the job, but cooperation can expand the amount of qualified people available for any task. When it is just as taken for granted that a man can be a nurse and a woman can be a fireman, then the true age of equality will be here.  Children do need to be exposed to all the possibilites that lay ahead of them, and seeing it in practice will make it so much easier for them in the future.

There is still sexism in today's world but sadly its still in third world countries or developing countries and religion.

my church isn't sexist, women can become pastors (in fact the pastor of my church is a lady)

But the biggest church in christian world is still sexist. Roman Catholic.

Anglican church is splitting up over woman bishops.

And then of course there is the biggest one of them all Islam.

I wonder why the Roman Catholic church is so sexist when it sets such a high store on the Virgin Mary?
