Prime Minister Stephen Harper has promised to fix the date of future federal elections once every four years, a move he says will take the politics out of calling elections.

Harper said the government will introduce a bill setting fixed dates, which in a statement he said brings "an end to governing parties manipulating the timing of elections for partisan advantage."

Harper also told the Victoria Chamber of Commerce he will push ahead with Senate reform.

"A 21st century legislature cannot remain dominated by appointees who may sit for decades, without a democratic mandate and with the ability to thwart the elected government. "

The government will propose that the next election take place in the fall of 2009. That would effectively keep the Conservatives in power for 3 1/2 years, a proposal that would solidify his minority government and is likely to spark a heated debate in Parliament.

"We will do more than just talk about the need for democratic reform, said Harper. "Steps are needed that are practical and that can be achieved without full scale constitutional negotiations."

Geez Welcome to the Republic of Canada.

Of course he wants fixed elections then he can stay in power longer.  Whats the point of the Westminster System if you can't bring down governments? Unless he wants to go the French Republic route which would make him become a President who would be elected every 4 or 5 years and act as an executive branch while still having the westminister system in the house of commons which would be run by a PM still and still liable to falls of governments but only efects the house of commons just not the president.

He wants to be called President Harper, how funny.

That man scares me more and more each day.  He isn't even trying to hide the fact that he is implimenting more and more US type policies.  And they say his approval rating has gone up and has a chance of winning a majority government.  If this continues, where will all the unhappy Americans go and can we follow?

Well there's an underground movement that was started by Thomas Jefferson to have Northern California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska seperate and merge into its own country called Cascadia.  But everything goes in cycles thats what I keep telling myself but blindingly following a fool is not a good idea.
