Title: Anti-Canadian vibe in the Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia region
Post by: Sportsdude on Mar 28 06 09:33
When I was talking to people and bringing up the fact that the CBC was one of the cable channels which I thought was completely awesome. I would get this strange look or eyes rolling response.  Plus the university television station that nobody watches was cracking jokes at canadians, so much so they had to put a disclaimer on the screen. (the university has students from Canada along with about 25 other countries.)

  My question is whats up?

That's funny. I have never experienced that here in Seattle. Most everyone I know generally consider Canadians their friendly neighbors to the north. What university are you planning to attend? Is it in Seattle or Tacoma. I hope you had a nice trip here anyway.

PLU. (boo ups)

Well my taxi driver gave me ah oh gosh not the canadians remark, the forementioned tv show. But I must say the person I was staying with and I watched the curling championships on CBC. But mostly I was getting blank stares. Maybe it was because I kinda have a 'canadian fetish' and I always brought up the fact that I thought it was so cool to have the CBC in Seattle.  Beats the real player.

I don't know, most of the people I were talking to were from bellingham, so they grew up as a border town kid and probly don't think much of it. But for me coming from the corn fields of missouri, lets just say it was like opening the pandora's box.
A brave new world.

Thanks sportsdude for being an official diplomat of canada and defending canadian culture and identity.

You really surprise me.I have travelled quite a few palces and only in very select locations were Canadians actually given a second thought and discussed about.(Israel was one in Europe the UK and Germany were quite fond of Canadians).

I do my best. Somebody has to tell americans about canadian life because its not in the textbooks.

When the average american thinks of Canadians they usually ponder images of guys who have mullets and play hockey and say eh.  Some don't even know that Quebec speaks french. Doesn't suprise me considering 50% of americans polled in a survey thought the first amendment gives americans the right to own a dog.

Hey Sportsdude, to us in Seattle, having CBC on the cable t.v. is no big deal. We border Canada and are so used to Canadians being around that we don't understand your excitement over it. People in Vancouver probably feel the same about Washington. My Canadian friends tell me they watch our local news here in Seattle. If you move here you will see what i mean.

yeah that finally donned on me on Sunday that most of the people I was talking to lived in a border town so to them the CBC was no big deal.

I agree- I've never really seen any anti-Canadian sentiment here- most everyone I know likes Canada.

Hey sports, hope all is well for you in Seattle so far. I think most Canadians feel the same about CBC too. Maybe because its tax money that pays for it? Maybe its because Canadians are more like Americans and would rather watch American Idol than CBC? (I am not saying this is a good thing). I don't know. But I think Canadians don't take CBC seriously either.

Cmon! How else could we get curling semi finals and finals? The CBC does a way, way better job than any other channel, (NBC) at showing the Olympics live.

The only thing I don't understand is, since it's funded by tax dollars, why is there so many fricken commercials? It should be commercial free!

Yep, best hockey coverage too. They do have decent sports coverage. I am just saying your avereage Canadian would rather watch Friends reruns or bloody American reality TV. I was just letting sports know, CBC is not a sacred thing north of the border. When I was in university, I only had CBC and CTV on my TV. Ahh, life was simple then.

makes a lot sense. CBC's fallen that much, in canadian society? How sad, but they do need to revamp their strategy when it comes to programming.  I heard that they do not show previews of the their shows right after its finished.  If thats the case they need to wake up to the modern era.

They show programs like Coronation Street and Simpsons?? This is not Canadian. Their news is ok, very one sided due to well, being owned and operated by the federal gov. But HNIC and the playoff coverage is by far, the best.

Yeah, schad..why do they need commercials? They must make tons of cash.

BBC is not one sided and they are owned by 10 Dowing Street.

What would Canadians complain about if there was no CBC?

Note to Sportsdude on how to act Canadian:

-Everyone complains about the weather and the CBC.

LoL.

I love the weather. Watching CBC this weekend to me was like a kid seeing something he shouldn't on television. But again this is coming from a guy who lived in the midwest his entire life and if uttered anything 'unamerican' would be labeled a traitor.
