Title: Requests for share of will
Post by: P.C. on Apr 02 09 04:37
[P align=left]I am an animal lover.  I donate to the SPCA and adopt pets instead of funding breeders and pet stores.

[P align=left]  But there's something about this commercial that's airing these days that for some reason is just a little off to me.  It's the one where they request you leave something in your will to the SPCA.  Don't get me wrong...I'm not suggesting it's a bad idea....it's the asking I suppose.  It just seems so wrong.

[P align=left]Is this 'wrong' or in poor taste ?

 [P align=left]

[P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"][O:P]I hear ya Michel.   I don't mind donating to charities....although I understand what you're saying about making proper choices to not have these problems in the first place.  However....we aren't making those choices and the need is there.  [/O:P]

 [P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"][O:P][/O:P]

[P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"][O:P]What I object to in this particular case, is asking something ...that to me, is extremely personal.  Your Will.  I can't help but think this is targeting lonely elderly people with big soft hearts and little or no family.[/O:P]

Exactly !  And the ad IS gut-wrenching.

Not me.  I wrote them a cyber letter. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/3.gif)   I know it will accomplish nothing, but it had to be said.

Well done, PC. You get my standing ovation.

The worst thing that ever happened to the periphery nations for example was NGO's and charities. They made poverty issues, HIV what it is today.

I see charities like state governments see gambling revenues for education in the states

Okay, enact gambling money to education, but then secretly cut education, so the gambling money replaces the state. Schools fail, education doesn't get better, but worse.

Heck, when it comes to asking money for charities, you do what you need to do to get money. I've no qualms about asking someone to leave a bit of something aside in your will if I work for the SPCA or any other charities. What does it matter so long as you get something in the name of charity? I know this attitude might put off a lot of people but you don't see what it's like on the other side where suffering is at its worst.

It can't hurt you to donate a bit to charity in your will. I mean, you're dead anyways. You're going to leave almost everything to your loved ones so why not a bit for charity?

I disagree.  Preying on the elderly is out of bounds IMO.

Another charity ploy which angers me is their sending you 'free' stuff through the post and then expecting you to make'a donation' for it. I always stick the 'gift' back in an envelope and send it back to them unstamped.

I just like writing them,. But sometimes I get so many that I feel I can hardly cope with all the replies I have to make. Only two times each year(at the most) do I seem to be able to catch up with them all.

I like letters too Gophie.  There is no comparison.  Better than email, or even a phone call....because you can ponder it over and over and over again.  And each time, a little bit of that magic, of pulling a letter out of your mailbox, comes back.  It's hard to describe....but I like the feel of a letter.

The thing with letters, is you can read the thought and care that went into writing them.  They are 'composed'.  Emails are 'hastey'.  Dashed off with little thought.....or so it sometimes seems.  A reflection of how we have grown to not appreciate the time it takes to stop and smell the roses.

I agree.  There is no reason an email can't involve thought as well.  There's just something about a letter.  *sigh*

I never said anything about preying on the elderly. I just wanted to say that it wouldn't hurt to ask money to help ease a bit of suffering in the world. Don't misunderstand me, I do agree that asking money from the elderly folks isn't right but that's not my point.

In the name of charity ?  If you're asking for it....then it isn't charity.  I think it's called begging.

Perhaps you might see it that way but I don't. If people who care for those who need money the most don't do anything, nothing will happen. Begging, pleading.... what do you want the folks at the charity to do? Smile wide and hope for something good to happen? When you see them struggling to help, they have to do whatever it takes to get money into the door and get these folks and animals a chance for survival.

I wonder if you might be missing the point a little bit.  I have no qualms about donating to charity....the operative word being donating...not solicited or extorted.

I'm not missing the point. It's just a difference of opinion. What does it matter as long as the money goes to charity? I give when I can and I do respect the folks out there who work for charity. It's not easy to get money.

Oh dear, I'm sorry Lise.....I SO didn't mean for that to come off sounding condescending at all.  I thought it sounded like you were thinking that I was against charity.

No, that's not my point, PC. I never thought you were against charity at all. The thought never even crossed my mind. It's all good. It was a good debate and I take no offence at anything said. (I hope you won't feel like I'm offending you in turn.....)

It's good to talk about these things and get different prespective. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)  Well..... except with SD because I don't understand him at all! (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Teasing/5.gif)
