38 sleeps, 2 hours, 3 minutes & 43 seconds
Yup.....that's the countdown. Get all your shopping/preparation done in the next 2 weeks for a stress free December. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/3.gif)
I like shopping the week before. It makes it oh so much more fulfilling.
Xmas shopping is not meant to be done months in advance.. thats cheating.
You're shopping in this economy? lol
Cheating is fun ! lol
Sawdust is a Dec 24th guy as well. Getting it done early is Dec 23rd. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/3.gif)
My shopping is the day or two before I fly home. I'll buy something Canadian of the non drug related variety as the national resource that we pride ourselves in is so special it can't be shipped on a commercial airline.
Oh that reminds me, thanksgiving is next week. Gotta start sending out cards.
I'm halfway done so yaaaay! I just need to figure out where to buy big baskets so I can create food baskets for the rest of the family.
If you put it that way P.C. the big day seems really close.
But that IS cheating... shopping so early! Has to be at least December!

Im going for double digits of Dec before I will consider it.
'Bless'!
Good to see ya bud.. hows school and work going with you?
pretty bad actually...
reffing soccer is still fun / good exercise but uni. is lousy.
I hate to be negative but I'm not taking stuff I want to, got a 3.5 hour commute for 4 hours of classes which are a waste of time (could just stay home and study myself since the profs teach out of the textbook), I'm barely passing one course, and probably failing another.
I've burned out and I'm tired of studying. *sigh* :(
I came across this a couple days ago:
[a href="vny!://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081104.wldropout04/BNStory/lifeFamily/home"]vny!://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081104.wldropout04/BNStory/lifeFamily/home[/a]
"Ms. Shaienks said the top three reasons given for dropping out were that students did not like their programs; that they wanted to work; or that they felt they did not have enough money."
I read that and thought "wow, I am at risk here... I qualify for all 3 reasons!"
If I fail and UBC kicks me out I've been thinking of joining the army.
Maybe I won't be giving that free psyc session to DS users after all... (sorry guys, lol)
But yeah, no shopping until December!!!
A 3 1/2 hour commute ?!?!! Wow, that's rough Marik ! First year is tough....hang in there. It'll get better....it HAS to.
How can one fail in Canada? You have to work at it. lol
I hear ya Marik. Did the whole commute thing 100km plus a day all through high school.
I took econ... don't know what I was thinking since I'm horrible at math...
lol Same here on the math part. I took an Econ class last year, but didn't last a month in it as I knew it was bad news.

Its not easy in University. theres a big transition.. as you are finding. The 3.5 hour commute is NOT helping you, a commute of an hour max is about what you need. If you make it through teh first year, as PC says it wont be easier, but you will have a routine and know how to study, alot time, etc, etc.
If you DO leave UBC and want to join the military for training into a trade, or they pay for your schooling.. look into it. Look into other branches like say.. Navy, or even air force. Depends what you want out of it.
But dont worry.. it wont get that far! You will pass.
I had problems with math.. didnt do too well from 10 to gr 12. When I was taking other courses one year out of HS, I redid my math 12 and took my time from the basics back up. After that I really got math and excelled in it since then.. Maybe look at what you are doing and redo the basics. Honestly, if you dont get that, you wont get the rest. Trust me on that, lol.
Good luck!
Did anyone have to cut down their 'xmas gift shopping and crossed off names or spent less than usual?

I havent started a list, started shopping, or acknowledged the approach or xmas yet.
So.. sorry but I dont know yet.
I do know that Im probably going to miss it.. so its up to the starfishie. But the list would probably have gotten bigger if I was at home.
Nobody is getting crossed off my list. But I will be doing a little more in the hand made things.
Hey purelife.....you can get some nice wools and yarns at the thrift stores.....and knit some nice scarves. A nice gift that works for both guys and girls, young and old. You can knit during your commute !

Yup. Totally.
Fortunately, my parents, sister, in-laws have all stopped exchanging gifts as of a few years ago. So no expensive adult gifts to buy. Heckyl and Jeckyl each get a gift from Santa, and my cousins' kids each get a gift card.
Xmas is usually an expensive time for us due to going out a lot. But we're going to scale that back this year....eat meals at home, invite people over to visit instead of going out, doing Xmas activities that are free or cheap.
Will still be skiing, since I already bought the Mt Seymour season passes back in Sept.

This is true.. I bought a crate of xmas mugs from the dollar store, and been thinking about package of cocoa, spiced apple cider, and some other goobers for each.. then throw some funny coloured cellophane paper and walla! Dont forget your candy canes.
EDIT: Drat some of you are too fast
Hey purelife- can you show me how to knit sometime? I know how to do the basic rows, but not purl or the flat stitch.
Russ- don't forget the "cake in a mug" microwave recipe that P.C. posted!
I'm actually going to send that cake mug thing to a friend in Edmonton. It was going to be for her bday, but now she and hubby are celebrating something different, so it will be for that. I got $1 store mugs yesterday too! Will pack this up and send it this week.
.
The craft fairs always have some knitted cloths for sale (about a 10cm square) for dish cloths, face cloths. I think I can manage making that with the basic "knit" rows.
Put a cloth in a $1 store mug, wrap with cello and voila!
Purelife- you could also wrap up your famous cran walnut bread in cello. People would love that!
I like the wrapping up baked goods idea. I was going to bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies and just take them to the family get together for everyone....but wrapping them up would be a great idea.
I'll also make some 'xmas cards too...
I also saw some nice cardboard gift boxes and metal tins at the $1 store.
There are TONS of ideas out there along those lines. Check out the library for any books on Gifts from the Kitchen. I have a couple that I love. Not only are there some great gift ideas...but totally fun packing tips to make them real gifts.
[A href="vny!://www.recipelink.com/holiday/merrygifts.html"]vny!://www.recipelink.com/holiday/merrygifts.html[/A]
This site has the names of several of those types of books, so you can get an idea of what to look for at the library.
Sometimes giving the mix is a good idea too. Package up in a canning jar...write out the directions on a card and attach with some ribbon. Then they can be made after the house is clear of an over abundance of Christmas goodies. Then kids can get involved too.

ADD: To be honest, my mind and heart hasn't been on 'xmas this year. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Sad/11.gif) I didn't even make up a list this year and write down what to get or make or do for that person. And I would plan this months in advance. *sigh*

Dirty Thoughts! Dirty Thoughts!
Michel:
LOL, prob no goat wax though. But I was told if I was single and went to Brazil I would never come home.
Oh he'll learn a new vocabulary alright.

You wont see him again. Might hear from him and get an invite to go down there...
Oooh cool, Russ. Hope you get to go to Carnival. I think it's in Jan?
lol Starfish wouldn't approve of Carnival and its antics. lol
Watch out for crazy gangs.
Well I'm sending postcards for thanksgiving, if I could only find a decent 2007-2008 Vancouver post card. The ones I've seen still are from the 80s post Expo.
No idea on Christmas.

For sure. I also heard they're good at teaching or showing the "alphabet technique."
