Anybody have one ?
Looking for a carpet steamer. With the prices to rent them these days, I'm thinking it might make more sense to buy one ?

Unless you're going to buy a professional machine that is well into four figures, forget about it. The machines for the masses are majorly inferior to the professional ones. Most people who buy them or rent them make a total mess of their carpets. Yeah, they may look clean on the surface, but they don't suck it all up.
Just like you use a lawyer to do up your will, use a carpet cleaner to do it.
Sorry, I don't have one, but I've heard Bissel is a good brand?
There are only 2 rooms left in the house with carpet. The bedrooms. One of these days, they're going too. Oh yea....and the stairs.

Well there's proof that marketing works. Yes, these appear to be good, because the ads make them look so good, and one can see the water moving. But in reality, junk compared to professional.
I've heard from word-of-mouth from friends who have a carpet steamer. I don't think I've seen the Bissel ads.
The consumer reports list the Hoover SteamVac as # 1 with the Bissell ProHeat running a close 2nd.
Stretch, I think it's a given, that a pro is going to do a better job. But I'd be a little bit ashamed to mention how often I do that. So with a 'lesser quality' home cleaner, done on a more regular basis.... it has got be better than nothing at all.

Firstly, consumer reports is a completely biased POS magazine. It always puts American manus near the top. I've seen this several times with regards to several items. Last time was with regards to vacuums. They put Hoover up there with Samsung. But the Samsung machine was rated way higher by "independent" consumer review reports.
Secondly, as I previously wrote, these "layperson" machines fool us to think our carpets are clean. And if you look superficially at a carpet post cleaning, it will look clean. But only on the surface. Reality will be that if you look "at the roots" you'll see your carpets are no cleaner. You will have mostly just pushed the dirt in, and made it all wet. These machines don't suck it up well enough, that's why they are cheap, compared to professional. Can you say MOLD! Do yourself a favour and bring in a pro. And especially for these two rooms that have probably never had the carpets professionaly cleaned. Go to DV for reviews of local (Metro Vancouver) carpet cleaners.
Good Luck!
Hoover's headquarters are in Hong Kong.

It's the reverse....
It doesn't really matter. I think stretch is assuming that CR is the deciding factor....when it really is just another resource....just part of the picture.
I'm of the opinion that DIY carpet cleaning is better than none at all.
We don't have carpets right now, but we used to rent the Rug Doctor machine from Safeway. It's about $20 plus the cleaning solution.

Yes Asian businesses are buying up American companies. That's not news. For Hoover this is a fairly recent happening.
Consumer Reports isn't pro-American? Give me a break. This did however, used to be somewhat honest in their April car edition about what POS their cars were.
My recommendation has been written - get a pro steam cleaner to do your carpets. It will be oh so worth it.
Or just run around with a bottle of Febreeze and pretend the carpets are clean...
What's that old saying....
if you have red carpets, drink red wine.
if you have white carpets, drink white wine.
Don't drink coffee unless you have a brown carpet.
I'm of the opinion that DIY carpet cleaning is better than none at all.

Me too Lil Me. How can a little bit of dirt be worse than a lot of dirt.....lol
Is that all it is....20 bucks ? I thought I remembered it being much more. (I guess that goes to show how long ago it was)
Good call on the colour code. I think I can drink mochachinos safely.
I can't remember the exact cost. But it seemed pretty cheap at the time...didn't want to spend a lot...especially when we were doing a move-out clean.

Well then, I must suggest that you probably don't understand carpet cleaning, and that's okay. Please trust me with this claim:
You will have mostly just pushed the dirt in, and made it all wet. These machines don't suck it up well enough, that's why they are cheap, compared to professional. Can you say MOLD!
Now if you don't, there is an easy way to test it. Go rent some $20 POS Safeway machine, pay for some $10 consumer low-grade carpet cleaner soap, and DIY. Then, hire a reputable professional to come and clean your carpets. Be sure to look at the water sucked up by a real machine. This will proove my point.
Remember, carpets are designed to trap dirt. If you don't clean them properly (professionally), you should really pull them up and have hardwood or lino, etc.
Thanks, and have a nice day!

And people say cats arent good for anything..
We have a Hoover Steamvac. I think I bought it from a clearance centre. Works good enough for my purposes. I intend to get rid of the carpets in the hallways and living room at the same time we reno the kitchen anyhow so I couldnt care if its not the best. Its hella better than doing nothing.
I'm not disagreeing with you there stretch. As I said before, it's a no brainer that a professional clean would be the best clean. I'm simply saying, that I wouldn't mind cleaning it a little more regularly and I'm not into hiring a pro every time I'd like my carpets cleaned. I have a dehumidifier that will take care of any dampness. All I'm looking for, is some personal experiences (if any) for a recommended brand.
Thanks Russ. I think I'm leaning in that direction. My friend has a carpet 'shampoo'er'. Now that's something that seems a little pointless to me.

Thats what we used to have (my parents reclaimed it awhile ago so thats when the hunt for something else came into effect), the steam IS better, but the carpet shampooer we had worked pretty good as well. Well, as far as it looked to me cosmetically anyhow.
Well if one of them offered a free carpet cleaner with purchase, that would sure make decision making a lot easier.(//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

You could always negotiate one!
That would narrow it down. Toyota doesn't negotiate....period.
Oh Sawdust.....are you out there ? Let's go pick up our new Nissan/Hoover.
lol. Hubby already thinks the Nissan sounds like a sewing machine. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/4.gif)
don't spend all on negotiating the carpet steamer and forget the rear bumper.........bumpers on trucks are one of the options
lol....I think these trucks come with bumpers.
I just finished cleaning the two carpeted bedrooms. Um...it took filling the gallon tank twice.....total empty out ? ONE cup. [img onclick="selecte('eh.gif');" alt=emoticon src="vny!://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/blehnet/eh.gif" border=0]
What kind of carpet steamer did you end up buying, PC? I might be buying one later.
I didn't buy one purelife....I'm borrowing one from a friend. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)
I have to say, that the fact that I am having difficulties, in no way diminishes my gratitude and appreciation to the friend who lent it to me.
I can only conclude that I am doing something wrong. But you're right Michel....that's one thirsty carpet.
I went over the carpets again, but not a drop in the holding tank. I HAVE to be doing something wrong.(//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Sad/4.gif)
It shouldn't be....yet it seems to BE ! I got it attached, but obviously wrong, as I'm not getting power to it. And trying to get the manual online is like trying to steal the secret to the Ark of the Covenant or something. It's all shrouded in mystery and codes.
okay what is the name brand and if you can tell me the model number also pls i can see what i can dig up for information and instruction manuals
okay what is the name brand and if you can tell me the model number also pls i can see what i can dig up for information and instruction manuals
Thanks Orik....I located the manual online....and the only thing I can figure, is that there is a piece missing. The piece is the 'recovery tank panel'....and the manual says for trouble shooting when there is no suction, that when the stairs/upholstery attachment is used, this panel must be removed. So I'm thinkin that might explain the missing panel.
okay good luck then. i have a older model steam cleaner. with stair attachment that works. if ur in the vancouver area and in need of a diffrent loaner let me know. i also have a carpet shampoer from rainbow the makers of the vacume cleaner... both work . i like the steam cleaner better...
Thankyou....that's very thoughtful...but I think I'll just work on drying the place out for now. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)
mhmhhhm but ur water reservoir is not capturing any water that should be being vacumed out. at least mine takes out the same amount of water that it puts in... unless u fixed that problem on ur steam cleaner
No...steamer problem not fixed. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Sad/11.gif) But I have the dehumidifier running full tilt and the woodstove cranked drying things out.
still gonna be a couple of days to dry out the carpets, making it possible for mildew and or mold and other problems to set in and possible damage to the carpet and carpet underlay...
Just how wet is the carpet to touch ?
will it soak through a towel if u lay one on the floor ?
is the carpet barely damp to the touch ?
if you walk around on your carpet in socks are your socks damp or are they soaked through if damp u should be fine... if soaking wet you may have problems.
It's actually drying up pretty good. It is dry to the touch already....but I'm sure it's still wet down deeper, so the dehumidifier is still cranked. I've already dumped about 2 gallons out of that thing in only a few hours.
well it sounds like you should be just fine then... the only problem is, is that the dirt was spread around liquefied and moved deeper in to the underlays where it will dry out and possibly cause further damage to the base carpet and underlay shortening t life span of your carpet...
Yes....I've thought of that. (ick) Hub's bringing home a Rug Doctor on the weekend. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)
*I'm not too concerned with the life span of the carpet. I would prefer to have all carpets out of here altogether.
if you walk around on your carpet in socks are your socks damp or are they soaked through if damp u should be fine... if soaking wet you may have problems.
I took advantage of the wet socks, and skated all over the house to clean the hard floors.(//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

want to borrow my floor polisher :D
yes i got one of them too. sells for 700 to 1300 bucks it scrubs carpets and polishes / cleans wood and linoleum floors. the only thing it doesn't do is clean up the soap suds but they dry quick and are easily vacuumed up. but i still think it doesnt make linoleom clean enough so u have to mop up afterwords anyways.. grrrr and who ever would spend 1000 bucks on the stupid thing is crazy I got mine for 150... id sell it for what ever reasonable offer i could get for mine... if i could find a blessed buyer for it....
i lost the lambswool tile and hard wood floor polishers and the green scrubbies. but i still have the carpet and the linoleum floor cleaners... i am out of their special shapoo though and its pricey 15 to 25 dollars to buy...
