Title: We've rid ourselves of the 1950's, husbands don't care if the wife makes more
Post by: Sportsdude on Mar 06 08 08:47
finally.
now if we could just eradicate the republican party who espouse to this way of chauvinist thinking.
(Leave it to Beaver, Father  Knows Best) hate those shows.
Frankly I'm tired of being the only guy in University. Where the hell are the men? out to lunch?

I thought that ended a long time ago? Mortgages have been based off of two incomes since the 70s. Nowadays, a wife can't stay home to raise kids even if she wants to. (if they want an average house).

70s? lol lol *spits out the coffee*

my mom was vilified by her family and the community for going to university in the late 70s. Then she was criticized for going back to work after a couple months I was born. Makes the most money, has the union health care which keeps me covered, and we won't be kicked to the curb.

Her first boss hated women, said they were good for nothing. Now this was the 80's. Then for the past few years the sexist name calling in parent-teacher conferences have started up again, in front of her face.

the revolution is hardly over.

 What do you mean?

I skimmed through the article and then read your post.  I'm still confused...

Yeah, we forget that North America has regional differences in culture.  Like any idiot, I tend to assume that everything is the same as Vancouver everywhere else.

Well you obviously haven't had a family in Vancouver in the 70s trying to buy a house and raise kids. My dad had a union job with CP Rail and my mom struggled through school and working just so we could have a 850 sq. ft. house and actually eat food too.

Take your MSNBC story and stick it where the sun doesn't shine!

If you spit out your coffee, do it in your home state cause that is where it belongs!

males aren't in college. The only class that has anywhere near 50% males I'm in is my geography class and the guys in there are natural resource management majors (park service). Sociology 3 males/30 females. Anthropology 4 male/30 females, English (a class everyone has to take) 4 males/30 females. History class 3 males/15 females.

they've disappeared. went poof into thin air.

The survey says men are fine with the women making more then them or "being the bread winners". Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best are 1950 era tv shows where it was the father making all the decisions. The wife in the shows were always oppressed, they never had any say in matters other then making dinner and cleaning. They didn't make the economic decisions because that "wasn't a woman's role".

ah, i see the story and what you mean by choices, etc.

didn't mean to rant. All my mon wanted to do back then was stay at home and be a mother, but she couldn't. There were 4 kids.

true, Vancouver was a lot cheaper to live in then, but times were still hard for some families.

-----------

that's urban. My family was rural. When I was born our schools were just getting de-segregated, some 20 years after the abolishment of segregated schools. I grew up in a different world and my parents did as well. In the mid 70's we were still having riots at universities and in local towns. My family's nearest town and university were set on fire and the other side grew up near Kent State and were officially the "Nazi" family in the neighbourhood because we spoke german.

Canada's experiences in the 70's were completely different then the United States in the midwest/south regions. It still is. It maybe on the same continent but it's a totally different world. I don't know what it was like to grow up in BC, I only know where I live.

I think it was easier later on as years go by.  (I could be wrong) There was also 4 kids for my mom to raise in the 80's and they had managed to buy a home in the late 90's.  I believe the mortgage has been paid off but nowadays, for couples who want to buy a home, it's really tough and one income wouldn't be enough.

I think she ended up working part time and did things at home to make some money. My dad was the main bread winner at that time and still is.

Perhaps guys are not into those courses as much as the girls.  And it obviously shows.  But have you checked other Uni/Colleges to same if these figures are relatively the same in those classes?

I think that if you stepped into the world of IT/game design/Engineering/Architecture, you'll see more men.  I could be wrong though.

I see what you mean sports. I have no idea what the southern states are like either.

My mom did go on to UBC and recently is a retired banker. Her pay was much more than my dad's.

  (sorry if I was rude).

It's a cross the board pl, the total student female ratio here is 60/40 and growing. Most universities and colleges are now 60/40. Only ones that still aren't are engineering focused schools. The rest are majority female. men aren't going to unversity. There's this weird logic going around that I saw at my local high school about why they're not going to post secondary. It's so stupid I can't even explain it. Basically it's become "uncool" to have a post secondary degree. Same thing is happening in the black community among males as well. It's an epedemic.

no big deal. I'm studying Canadian history right now and pre 1960's Canada seems to me to be a lot like what the US went through during the 60's and 70's and 80's.

Sorry to say SD......your dad didn't appear to be too responsible a person.  Your mom could have used the reimbursed premiums to buy herself something nice.

I just heard on the news last night, that if men do 30% more housework, it increases their 'bedroom time' by 50%.  Pretty good return on the investment ?  [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="vny!://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/more/bigs/c032.gif" border=0]

Nah, vaccuming is for girls! So are cheesy movies...

Hmmm, I wonder if this has something to do with me being single?

(just kidding on the "for girls" comment btw!)

My guy's grandpa loves to vacumm, and perhaps, that's where he got it from.  He made it VERY clear to me that HE'LL be vacumming the carpets at our new place.  LOL  Hey- I ain't fighting. :)  Now, to get him to buy a better vacumm...... maybe I'll just break the old one... LOL

hilarious, Van Dude.

Back to the original topic, I think it's great that people are free to work (...or not...) in whatever capacity they choose.  I remember in the early '80s when Michael Keaton was Mr Mom.  It was the first time a stay-at-home dad was portrayed on screen.  Then it was the cartoon Adam, before he became a dot.com consultant from home.

Does anyone know of anyone where the father stays home to watch the kids and the wife is bringing home the bacon?

A LOT people I know out here in the 'burbs work opposite shifts to avoid paying childcare.  If the dad works nights, he stays home with kids during the day.

I know a couple guys who have stayed home on a temporary basis with kids (ie laid off of work, on disability, etc.).

And I know a couple guys who work seasonally (ie fishing) and stay home the rest of the time.

But I don't know a single guy who stays home (without collecting some source of income) all the time while the wife works.

Same here.  But my coworker told me of a friend she knows where they guy stays at home and doesn't make any money while the wife works.  She makes enough to support the two of them and their kids.  I think this situation is really rare.

I know a guy on long-term disability who stays home with his kids.  He makes quite a bit (tax free) on his WCB cheques because he was in a high-paying trade when he was injured.

I know another couple of guys who had kids later in life and were able to take early retirement and collect their pensions while they stayed home.
