Title: Lunar New Year aka "Chinese" New Year
Post by: Lil Me on Feb 04 08 09:11
It has been brought to my attention that lots of other nationalities/cultural groups celebrate the Lunar New Year, so it's too restrictive to call it "Chinese New Year"...
Anyways, what's everyone doing this year to celebrate?

Wednesday night will be at mom's for dinner.  Saturday is my dad's bday so mom and I are heading out to Chinatown for groceries and then cooking it that night....I hear crabs are in the works!  YUMMY!

How about you, LM?  Are you going to any festivities with your kids?  I might check out a few.

Nothing major planned.  We usually have a family dinner, but nuthin this year.  The aunt who plans it is currently in HK and none of the rest of us have any time or inclination.

Made dragon masks with my Beaver kids last night.  Had extra supplies, so Cubs are doing the same thing tonight.

Having lunch at the seniors' home on Sunday with grandmother.  They're doing a CNY-type celebration for the residents and their families.

I'll be celebrating it on-site in Cambodia. (//forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/14.gif)

That sounds really fun.  Do you guys put on a mini parade afterwards?  That must be soooo cute with your cubs.. :)

Ja. They usually don't go out of their way to advertise CNY. Even Save-On Metrotown got into the act with displays of oranges and dragons. There was even a guy dishing out free noodle samples but I didn't try it.

Got an invite to celebrate CNY with some good friends and neighbours.  We always have great meals at their place- fusion of Chinese and Persian cooking.

A fusion of Chinese and Persian cuisine.  That sounds so exotic !!

In the past, they have served different combinations of: a Persian stew, fried rice, stirfry, baked ham, salad, pasta....
 it's all good :)

They eat everything.  They are athiest, though they went through the motions of being Islamic back in the old country- because everyone does...you have to.

I know another athiest family from Iran, but they won't eat pork.  Not used to it.  They think it's weird....kind of like us eating horse or something like that.
