Title: The Grass is Always Greener....
Post by: P.C. on Jan 28 08 09:04
...on the other side of the Septic tank.

I think we may need to have a new septic field put in.  I know nadda of such things.  Has anyone had any experience with this ?  I'm wondering how much of my yard is going to have to be dug up....and the possible cost is scaring me.

Sorry...I'm a city kid.

I do know those things need to be emptied.  My grandmother had the misfortune of taking the "last flush" when visiting relatives in the Okanagan.  The septic tank was full.  Needless to say, she walked out of the bathroom with her pants rolled up to her knees.  lol

Keep us posted with the details of your septic field adventure, P.C.

This is realtively 'new...ish' for me too Lil Me.  There is a septic tank...that needs to be emptied (and we're pretty sure that's not the problem, because we just had it emptied) and then there is a septic field.  That's the part I know nadda about.  In spite of looking up info on the net, I still can't grasp the concept.  And the little bit that I DO grasp is a little frightening....as we believe it may interfere with the new shop we built last year. You can keep the shop and drill horizontally under it.  More expensive, but can be done.
Mr LM does it for work.

The septic tank is designed to allow liquid to leach out slowly.  I believe the area downhill from the tank is called the septic field.  This area could be saturated from recent rains or rise in the ground water table, and the leaching rate is not happening as anticpated

building over the septic field may have also affected the evaporation rate

Ooo...that's a good point 49er.  Hadn't thought about that.....although there were signs of trouble before we built the shop. (I'm sure it's not going to help)  So if we have to replace (or whatever you with it) do we have to have it in the same place? [/DIV]

If I'm not restricted by building codes or neighbors I would locate it down slope and at the farest perimeter on my property

We are restricted by neither.  So you're saying it doesn't have to be in the same place ?

You don't really have much knowledge of anything else either, but that never stopped you from being an "expert" on it!

Yes, you can redirect the seepage away by piping or via french drain to location of your choice

Pheww.  I just wanted to get as much info as possible before we embark on this.  I hate having to call for a service that I'm totally uninformed about.  Thanks 49er. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

you're welcome, just remember these two principles in sewer design.........shit floats and water flows downhill
