Quatchi is a young sasquatch with a long brown beard and blue earmuffs, while Miga is a snowboarding sea-bear — part killer whale and part kermode bear.[/p] And Sumi is a spirit animal that flies with the wings of a native thunderbird.[/p] There's even a sidekick: Mukmuk, a small friendly Vancouver Island Marmot.[/p]

Finland called, they were surprised to learn that they're hosting the olympics too since they're the Soumi nation. (soumi is said sue-mi and sumi is said sue-mi as well) lol
a sasquatch?
It's funny that they use the Vancouver Island Marmot as a mascot considering its an endangered species on Vancouver Island due to constant clear cutting and forest deforestation to make phone books and newspapers... Maybe this will push the feds to have an Endangered Species Act for once, but that's probably wishful thinking.
They should have included far better known characters for the mascots:

OMG !!!!! Is that Rudolph on the spit ???? [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="vny!://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/konfus/n035.gif" border=0]
I think I agree.....at least they would be recognizable.
The mascots are quite cute and lovable.
I was fully expecting Expo Ernie in an HBC Olympics sweatshirt.
I dunno. I think they look like those teletubbies, which i think are stupid anyhow.
But if the kiddies like em I guess thats the plan?
yahoo canada has a title right now that says "vancouver mascots: modern pokemon?"
THAT'S the name I was trying to think of. Pokemons.....that's what they look like.
And talk about regionalism here for a moment, the games are in the country of Canada not the country of British Columbia. This really is just a week exercise in tourism ads for BC.
The best mascots I can remember was '94 Lilihammer, two norweign children dressed in traditional clothing and since mascots are for kids mainly, I could relate to that more then pokemon looking characters.

Haakon and Kristin were the first human-like mascots for the Olympic Games. The names are children from Norwegian folklore.
But then again its really about the games, like Dan Jansen finally winning who is still to this day my parents favourite athlete ever. After he finally beat the greatest speed skater in the history of the sport, CBS did a movie about his life.
Then after that Forsberg's goal in the gold medaal game against Canada.
Still amazes me.

I'm sorry....I'm trying to keep with the spirit of it all, but they say nothing of Canada....except that we have no imagination of our own. There. I said it.
same graphic arts company? maybe?
I don't think so. Just the same mind set I guess.
oh.. my.. gosh.. POKEMON!!!
They even say their own name when you drag your mouse over them!
Miga! Miga!
makes me want to play Pokemon Yellow again!
I happened to be walking through the Bay yesterday morning as they were unpacking the boxes. I chose not to buy the $25 mascots, cute was they are..
Ja. It's official, the mascots are at the Bay. I looked at them this morning as well. Pricey but you know what? After the Olympics, they're going to be like 1/2 price or less. I still have my Sydney Olympic mug. That's the only souvenior I got from the hyped up event.
I like the Miga mascot. Cute but I can't undestand the yeti one.....
Well, I prefer the Chinese. But what's the point of Olympic mascots in any case - apart from making a mint in merchandise?
and the PR meet and greets.
What's with the names? Are they First Nations? Inuit? or ???
I'm really liking Muk Muk- the sidekick. Poor guy doesn't even get a rel life body or a plush representation. As Muk Muk was absent from the unveiling ceremony, a Province columnist quipped that he "missed the Schwartz Bay ferry..."
