I'm curious to know if any of you parents started an RESP on your child(ren).
Aw. I was all ready to sing out "ECT" after the "RESP"!!!
You're quick Lil Me.
LOL, you can still sing. :))
It's probably more interesting than RESP.
Nobody I know had a college savings plan. We just take out loans. lol
[a href="vny!://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/hip/lld/cesg/publicsection/faqs_resp.shtml"]vny!://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/hip/lld/cesg/publicsection/faqs_resp.shtml[/a]
Yes. Already done so. It's such a pain but it needs to be done.
I never grew up in that kind of snack bracket. The rule was....2 weeks after graduation to get a job, move out or pay room and board. If you want to go to uni...get 2 jobs.....lol.
I can't stop singing...

Same here.....worked full 40 hours/week while I was going to univ.
I don't think it was a family stance......I didn't know a soul who's parents paid for a university education. (or bought them cars and gave them credit cards or apartments) In their eyes, it was part of growing up and becoming independent. Their motto was 'you always appreciated more, the things you earned'. I suppose it's old school, but I tend to agree.
True enough. But at the rates that tuition is increasing, it's good to have a little bit put away.
The Canadian gov't grant is free money...so why not?
In my case, my parents weren't poor enough for me to qualify for loans and I wasn't smart enough to get scholarships..........caught in the middle, so had to work!

I agree....to a certain extent. Tuition IS increasing.....but in relationship to even minimum wage, they have risen in stride.....all things remaining somewhat equal. (of course living expenses have NOT been as equal and take a bite out things a little quicker)
I think, if it's something you can do for your kids.....why not. (I'd still hold out a little.....lol. It's amazing how much more seriously you take your courses when you've had to work for them) I know......it's really old fashioned thinking.
No, no... it sound idea, PC. If you want an education, you have to work for it. But having said that, I'm going to help my kids as best as I can but I'll also encourage them to find work if it suits them and their timetable.
I think things are changing in that respect. I always think of it as an 'American' concept.....(although I don't know that to be true from my own experiences.....it's just how I've always thought of it)
I think the plus side to kids remaining dependant, longer....is it puts it back into perspective, that other cultures share their living spaces with 2 or 3 generations of family. And that has to have it's benefits too. (and I don't just mean financially)
True though too dependent is too much. Kids today, they're too dependent on their folks. Just look at Stats Canada. The number of kids staying home with mom and dad are increasing though I don't blame them. With housing prices skyrocketing, where are they going to stay?
Yup. And that's a bigger issue than tuition.
I guess it staves off that empty nest syndrome for parents these days. In the old days, the idea of turning your teens bedroom into a snooker room/bar is on hold for a few more years.
Maybe if you do it, they will leave home. Kind of hard to sleep with billiard balls flying over your head.

Oh, somebody mentioning Stats Can and it wasn't me. LOL
Yeah I like to say I did my 3 years at home before I went to university and not after. Plus why would I move back? And I sort of have paid for my education. All my paycheques over the summer went to schooling.
But honestly. The way the BC economy is going. You can realistically pay for most of your tutition (I said most) by working the summer jobs. I mean I just saw an ad in the paper for 20 bucks an hour at mcdonalds here in Nanaimo. 20 BUCKS!!! Holy S#@! I told a friend what I saw and he told couldn't believe it.
So when the economy is this good, kids don't have an excuse honestly. That's why I'm filling out my workers permit over the weekend. So come summer I can find a job and during school I can get a job on campus for 10 to 12 an hr.
GIANT EDIT: Just got an email, I just made 20 bucks. lol sweet.
SD, try getting a job that's related to your field of study........in the long run it is going to help in your post graduate interview or your job interview after graduation
thanks for the tip!
Hmm that could be tough got any ideas on what I should look for?
GIANT EDIT: Just got an email, I just made 20 bucks. lol sweet.
You made 20bucks from an email? Could you send it my way too?! I want $20!!! Heck, send me 50 of these emails for an even grand!
haha lol, it only took 20 minutes too! 20 bucks in 20minutes. lol
haha no.
$20/20minutes. Are you secretly a massage therapist at The Swedish Touch?
somebody lied, oh well its still free money. Its more like 3 dollars but I'll see in two weeks.

If you're gonna focus on a career in urban planning, start at the very bottom which is working for the city in their operations department. All sorts of menial jobs there that big, sturdy laddies like you find effortless; the landscaping, cleaning up public properties, etc. Pay is usually good like $15 an hour for students. You'd get to spend the summer mostly outdoors. The people that hire you will be the same sort of people you'd need connections for when it comes to graduate school applications and future careers working in city engineering departments.

yeah I know about the tax thing, the USA is like the herpes virus. Gift that keeps on giving. Except I've got a cure, but that's down the road a bit.
Can't do cafeteria work, culinary arts program does everything and makes fancy food and makes you pay an arm and a leg for it.
I'm in short supply of cash. But I'll be fine. I've got away to make some money but I'll find an on campus job.

Really? They clear the tables and wash the dishes too? Interesting, but a bummer too as campus food services is always a sure bet to get a student job.
yeah. And then they fix viel and lamb for 10 bucks.
yeah they have sushi all the time, lamb, veil, etc.

Do you mean veal (i.e., baby cow)? Now that's fancy. What do the animal activists on campus have to say about food from calves and lambs?
yeah veal.
crazy i know.
dunno. nobody's said anything.
I never eat meat there anyway. End up getting a salad which still ends up 8 bucks (calculated by weight).
