Love mooncakes but they're so damn expensive! Like $7 for one at the Crystal Mall. I'm not buying till after because they go on sale 1/2 price afterwards.
Anyways, if you're looking around for something to do, check this one out:

Oh, I love mooncakes...I love the yellow yolk and the bean paste. The other weekend, I got a bit of a sample from mom's. That's the only time when I get mooncake. I hope that she gives me more. :))) It's too expensive for me to fulfil my cravings... :((

Check this out!!!
(Personally, I don't care for mooncakes).

WOW! That's huge!!!
apparently they're at superstore.
I was just reading some recipes for mooncakes.....and for the life of me, I can't understand what would make them expensive. There is nothing exotic or pricey in them.....and the recipe is fairly basic. The little molds are reasonably priced, and would last forever. Go figure.
I like the mooncake with the nuts & seeds..........don't care too much for the yolk
I'm going to try and make some. I didn't realize it, but apparently I have a mold for mooncakes. I've had it for YEARS and I've used it every year for making shortbread. [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="vny!://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/more/bigs/c028.gif" border=0]
So what the heck is lotus seed paste ?
my friends going to buy me some moon cakes.

That's verrrry nice of them because they are very expensive. One little square of a moon cake is worth the price of lunch! (btwn $5 and $10)
They're expensive because it takes time to make them. The ingredients are not expensive but it takes years and years and years or practise to make the perfect mooncakes.
Lotus seed paste come from lotus plants. Yep, the same exact water plant you would find at the pond. After the flower is gone and the pod surfaces, you would harvest the seeds. Then mashed them up and put them into cans.
Mooncakes doesn't always have to be lotus seeds, you can actually make them from red bean paste. I've even seen green bean ones too.
Another reason for the pricing has to do with the festival as well. Like Halloween, these stuff are expensive just before the event and goes 1/2 price afterwards. I'm waiting for that to happen so I can get them! (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/7.gif)
Waaah! I can't believe that I'm the only one who likes those salty duck eggs......
You mean the egg in the middle of these mooncakes Lise?
Yeah, those salted duck eggs. I've a weakness for the yolk... I know, it's so bad for you but I always eat those last. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)
I saw a mooncake with ham and shark fin in them. Ugh. They cost like $9 each.
Then, I like them too, Lise. So, you're not the only one. :)))
salted duck eggs, sounds good.
Hehe, SD. You should give it a try first. It's.... an acquired taste. Trust me when I say that not all folks are crazy about them.
Oh good, purelife likes them too. I thought I was the only one... I love them in congee with century eggs as well. OMG. Hungry...

Me TOO! I don't eat them that often because I don't buy them. I have to request for my mom to buy them and make congee. My guy wouldn't touch that stuff.
SD, how could you say it's good when you haven't tasted it yet? You're getting ahead of yourself there.[/DIV]
hmm I'm sure I'll run into them sooner or later. I try everything. Girls have said they'd cook stuff for me. lol free food.
beats KD everyday.
EDIT: I said it sounds good, I'd like to try it. I find anything cultural fascinating.
Sorry, misread. I thought that you said it tasted good. My bad.
no problem. happens. :)
P.C.- I love how you're always trying new recipies. (Personally, I think shortbread tastes better than moon cakes...)
I like shortbreads. They're soooo yummy. Does anyone have any good shortbread recipes?
Those salted egg yolks in moon cake are not duck eggs (too big), they are chicken eggs.
Really? I was under the impression they were duck eggs because I've tasted salted duck eggs by themselves before and they taste the same as from the moon cakes.
An exerpt:
A thick filling usually made from lotus paste is surrounded by a relatively thin (2-3 mm) crust and may contain [A title=Yolk href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yolk"]yolks[/A] from [A title="Salted duck egg" href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salted_duck_egg"]salted duck eggs[/A].
[A href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mooncake"]Wikipedia[/A]
Correct, it is duck yolk.......I called my mom to confirm
BUMP
One year later, and I still hate mooncakes.
Always had a fruitcake-like experience with them growing up...someone would would give us a metal tin full of mooncakes, and they would sit in the fridge for YEARS...unopened.
Never had mooncakes...never heard of mooncakes...till now.
