Ever notice: Canada customs tend to let the rich people driving expensive cars who are looking pretty, glitzy, or fashionable get away with not paying duty when just going to the US for like a day even though they may have spent like $400 in one day while common or average peoeple tend to go inside for small amounts?
Heck, if I was a Canadian patrol guard and I see Brad Pitt drive by in an expensive car, I won't be stopping him! What's your point, Nexus?
If you don't want to get hassled at the border, bring a cute Asian girl and make sure she drives her Lexus, Audi, Benz, or Beamer. However, even if she doesnt drive a beamer but a newer model car and have the pretty Asian girl show some cleavage or at least dress fashionable chances are great that you will be let through..,unless of course you get a female guard.
I know a pretty Asian girl that goes to the US at least 3-4x a month and brings back $300/400 each visit but stays half a day. She declares the goods every time but she ensures she goes to a male guard and she is let through all the time without having to pay duty or taxes.
CCBA prides themselves for not profiling or showing favoritism but the reality is that they do sterotype people and have their favorites and can be "influenced" typically by a pretty rich [Asian] girl.

Reality Check......you need a reality check.
Your observations might have some merit if you suggested that some can be 'influenced' by a pretty girl.
if that the case I wonder why drug dealers don't use more pretty women for mules
border agents don't fool around. All they were missing at YVR was their riot shield and helmet and they'd be ready to go, they were in full armour. Very stressful job.

I think they used to do that all the time......that's why no one is above suspicion any more. They made platform shoes in the 70's that had the hollow compartments in them. Something tells me it wasn't for their lipstick. [/DIV]

I think you need a reality check. It's not just a pretty girl but a pretty asian girl in a luxury car. Lots of asian girls laugh at this and how it is true. It's a fact that you don't want to accept but Asians returning to Canada get waived through a LOT more compared to other races. What's next, you're going to write that Bush is a great president too? And yeah, just to be clear, The Nile is a river in Egypt.

A lot of Canadians and not just border guards suffer from "Asian or Yellow Fever". Back in the day, just a regular pretty girl could influence a customs officer in Canada but now it's Asians (Orientals) who drive nice cars, especially those with Hello Kitty or other cute toys in them. It's a double standard that hopefully one day the media will pursue.

Maybe it's time to hire more Asian border guards......so the white girls can enjoy the same "standard"
FYI......in some US neigborhoods, refering to asians as "Orientals" will get your ass kicked

The Asian border guards are typically at the Airport. The oriental thing must be unique to North America as in Europe/UK and elswewhere Asians refers to East Indians. Goes to show you North Americans know nothing about linguistics and make up their political correctness as they go along.

My reality is in check. My reality tells me such generalizations are almost always a bit off.
Although beautiful Asian women will always turn heads....to assume that there is such specific taste in a specific profession is kind of bizarre.

I got offended at Super Store when I was with my friend. Instead of Asian food it was Oriental Food.

That is just plain ridiculous....you guys are so brainbrashed into this political correctness crap that you lost all sense of reality. It's though police like you that make Canada and USA as wimpy as it is.
I'm still curious where you are from.
The term oriental is used commonly in business and landmarks throughout the world. If anyone says the term is offensive they should be canned and smacked in the head a few times to knock some sense in them.
If on the otherhand we call orientals fish heads, that I agree is offensive.
Looks like the truth is slowing starting to come out:

I dont have a problem with most of the comments....which in fact are true but it goes to show you that these are immature people guarding our borders and they choose too let whomever in or not as they see fit. The same goes with collecting taxes and duty. Like with our polticians and our government there is no problem until shit hits the fan. No doubt this will happen at some time in the future.
Now I understand why Canada does not arm her Customs Border guards.
Yipes. Scary. That they are young isn't the problem. That they are immature IS.

The two almost always go hand in hand. Usually you don't have one without the other. That's why road rage is committed typically by young males between 16 and 28.
No, I haven't noticed that. I've been shopping in the States for a couple of times and have spent, in total as a group, nearly $500 at times and most of the other times were around $200. I know that I'm just one example amongst everyone else who has been to the border and back but I didn't have to pay. My friends who have spent more than me didn't have to pay extra.
Y'know, it might work if some cute asian chick was with a white guy in a Lexus with a chiwawa! *sarcasm* Next time, borrow the asian girl next door who has a chiwawa and a prada purse. Give her some gucci perfume and you might be set to go. Tell them you're heading to the Casinos. Better luck next time, eh?

Really ? I don't find that at all. I know of many many young people who are not immature and are very responsible. I also know many older people who are quite immature and very irresponsible. I guess by definition, 'immature' would imply youth, while 'mature' would suggest age...but I was thinking more about behaviour.

You're not Oriental by chance?
Sorry to blow your theory. I have shopped in the States more than a couple times. Maybe a couple hundred times. I have never paid either. I am not Asian.
Not so quick PC. What kind of car do you drive and how much on average have you declared when crossing?

Over the years.....several different cars. From beaters to luxury. On average from $100 to a $1000. Sometimes more....sometimes less.[/DIV]
My friends are not asian and have crossed the border declaring around $500-$1,000 often and have not paid duty. She was travelling by bus and sometimes in a beat up car. She told me not to lie and just tell the border guards exactly how much you spent for the day.
Oriental? WTF is that? When I think of oriental, I think of rugs and noodles.

lol purelife. I think 'Mr. Changes Handle Constantly', is merely making such comments to get a rise out of people.
Why do we hardly ever hear of occidentals?
Or Incidentals.
On the other hand, we're always hearing about accidentals.
this thread is too funny.
How can anything be TOO funny?
because its fundimental?
Hmm, that needs thinking about.
I think it has a lot to do with mental.

More bad BC Guards! What's up with them, the entire management structure seems to be very polluted at the BC Border Crossings: vny!://www.cknw.com/news/news_local.cfm?cat=74281417912&rem=77325&red=801141723aPBIny&wids=410&gi=1&gm=news_local.cfm
VANCOUVER - A Canada Border Services agent, already charged with sex assault, now faces more charges.
32 year old Daniel Greenhalgh worked as an agent at the Douglas Border crossing.
Back in May, an 18 year old woman claimed she was inappropriately strip searched in a public washroom near the Douglas Border crossing customs building.
Now, after further investigation two more charges of sexual assault have been laid against Greenhalgh for incidents that are said to have occured between April 13th and May 26th.
Greenhalgh will be back in court October 29th.
hey purelife, ever wonder what an the origin of an oriental is? look at the supermarket, oriental foods. what ethnic background are they referring to? What about Asian? If you look at Shaw TV you will see that they refer to Asian TV as East Indian, Fijian, South Asian. But, make no mistake they do NOT refer Asian to mean anyone from the Orient. So, if you don't know what Oriental means, you proabably are about as stupid as someone missing a chromosmome or two. And, if you were in the UK, an Asian is from Indian not from the Orient.
It's ironic cuz Canada gets most of it's law and methodology from the the UK but it's stupid shits like purelife that will call an Asian when the term Asian is way too broad since many countries comprise Asia. Oriental just specifies the race. Go and open up the phone book and you will see what/who uses the term Oriental and why. You're such an ignorant twit. No wonder Canada is screwed up cuz of the rednecks and white trash people like you. You probably also believe that Bruce Allen is a racist too. What a loser you are.
North Americans are in a world of their own and have a state of political correctness that borders on insanity: Major objection to the use of oriental is chiefly limited to North America. Its use is much less controversial in Europe, as well as in Asia where, especially in south-east Asian countries, the word is in comparatively widespread usage.

This was provided for information only......you can choose to ignore.
As an example, it would be in my own interest that I do not call someone a Polack in a Polish neighborhood
I think that this change has only taken place in the last decade or two. I know, growing up, it was used....and I don't believe it was used in a derogatory way, but now I don't know for certain.
It IS a little confusing. According to that article, they refer to the term as being 'antiquated'....(I never considered myself old enough to have been present when 'antiquated' terms were used...lol)
I think it's mostly confusing, because on the surface, it doesn't SEEM like it would be a derogatory term. A person from Canada is Canadian....so it could easily be assumed that a person from the Orient would be Oriental. (NOT that I'm arguing whether it IS or ISN'T correct.....just stating where the confusion may stem from)
It's always nice to know what is correct.
Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Oriental—meaning "eastern"—is that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.
American Heritage Dictionary
Although when my cousins use the word oriental they are using it as a racial slur.
However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations.
Well, I've always wondered why it's necessary to identify one by their race anyways. I find THAT offensive.
I never refer to my friends as Asian or Japanese or anything else but my friend.
