Title: Flambe.... anyone tried it?
Post by: Lise on Jun 09 07 10:08
Yes? Anyone? I'm debating. Hubby thinks it's risky and ok.... a teeny weenie part of me thinks so but I found this recipe that calls for flambe. Banana and rum flambe. Sounds delicious.

Any tips before I call in the fire department and issue a warning?

There's no danger Miss Lise.  I do Bananas Royale all the time.  It's majorly scrummy.

Just don't hang your eyebrows over the top of the pan.  It only 'flams' for seconds.....basically just burning off the alcohol.

do it. its pretty good and a good party favour.

heres a note for if you do.. if you use a butane torch to light a shot of this stuff in a shot glass dont blow the alcohol out and crack the glass.. your friends with teh cracked glass will cut their lip as per murphys law and blame you for the next few months. lol. trust me on this.

I'm assuming it's the same thing Lise.  It goes by many names.  I usually cut the bananas in half and split them length-ways.  Saute in a little butter (when the pan is hot enough to make the butter bubble lightly)  Toss in a couple tablespoons of brown sugar.  Move them around in the pan gently as they break easy.  (you're just basically heating them through)  Throw in your rum and 'shake' your pan to distribute the rum into your glorious buttery brown sugar.

If you have a gas stove, tip your pan until the liquid comes near to the top rim of the pan.....it will ignite automatically.  If you have an electric range....a match will suffice.  (long fireplace matches work too, if you're nervous.....but I just use a regular match)

Serve with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream or whipped cream.

*sometimes a drop or two of hazelnut extract is nice in there too.

OOOOOHHH!  Beautiful recipe.  I'd probably set off the smoke alarm if I did it here.

It IS yummy Kitten.  One of those super simple things that comes off like it was quite a fuss.  Drizzle some of the yummy caramelizey brown sugar over the ice cream.....a sprig of mint ....a 'fine dining' dessert experience.

The alcohol doesn't smoke at all.  It burns for a few seconds and that's it.

That's good to know.  I had visions of trying to get up there to turn it off before the firemen got here.

That sounds nummy.
Aw c'mon kitten, a visit from the hunky firemen isn't all bad...

(totally offtopic: I saw a really nice looking firefighter in London Drugs today carrying a baby.  It was a truly a sight to behold)

Not really.  It's just that they would be out rescuing grateful damsels all over the place, and I might get jealous.

I know.  They go to rescue helpless men.  Somebody has to do it.

Hmmm.....sounds divine, Ms. PC. And easy! Maybe I'll give it a go but I'll probably do it outdoors. Perhaps next BBQ session.

I know you don't use sugar Miss Lise, and I'm sure you know your way around these things better than I........but this recipe will not work with any kind of sugar substitute.

I'm thinking some almonds or pecans would be good in this recipe?

Pecans would be an excellent addition Lil Me.

Do you say "pee can" or "puh cahn"?

rofl....I actually had to say it out loud to see.  I'm somewhere in the middle of pee and puh, but with a definite lean towards the pee.  lol

OhOh.....low batteries on the mouse......I have to type very slowly.
