They said YES!
Before I say congratulations.......THEY who?
malaspina
why?
Why ?......because I didn't know who 'they' were. That's all.
Anyways.......Congratulations SD !!!!!! That was a long time coming.
How do you feel?
WOO HOO, Congratulations SD, You'll love Malaspina and the Island.

I can't wait.
Going to major in Geography. I want to be an urban planner.
I feel relieved.
In the middle of last week I stumbled on this part that said they would send it by email so I haven't been all crazy about getting the mail.
Kewl! What do you have to do now then? Have you looked for a place down there?
right now, passport, student visa.
Pay.
Then I pick my classes.
Student housing
Then Orientation
fun times.
My take on things would be to apply for student housing NOW! The Malaspina website recommends that you apply for housing the same time you apply for admission.
Not much use getting a student visa if you're going to be living under a bridge. Lol
I want to live with the condo thingy. Where you have your own room and share a kitchen living room.

Ditto to that. Did you not apply for on-campus student housing when you first applied to Malaspina? I hope you did otherwise it looks like you're SOL.
The web-site there says: "Apply NOW to add your name to the waiting list for September 2007." That tells me student housing is already full and the only thing left is the wait list. Even if one gets accepted, they say "acceptance at Malaspina University-College does not guarantee acceptance in residence."
Also, it says "Room assignments are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Letters of acceptance are distributed to students in June/July for the fall semester; in November for the spring semester, and in early April for the summer semester."
By the way, congrats on your acceptance at Malaspina University-College and good luck from student housing, to your student visa, to your classes.
Congratulations Sportsdude.
So this urban planner job... do you lay out blueprints for roads / parks or something?
Urban Planning basically means people who lay out cities, Urban Planners are the city builders.
Think of the computer game Sim City.
I love that game.
[a href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_planning"]vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_planning[/a]
A good example of good urban planning is downtown Vancouver.
I emailed the Residence people. I'll talk to them tomorrow most likely.
sounds neat. i miss college. i knew that i would. my regret is not taking pictures during college.
enjoy.
congrats SD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *bless*
my parents are shocked at the cost. They think it should be more then it is. (considering this is cheaper then an in-state public university)
Hopefully, everything will work out and it'll be a smooth transition into college for you, SD. Are you planning to visit them soon just to check out teh campus and teh peeps?
My dad made it sound like he wanted me to see the place asap. So who knows I might visit at the end of this month or in June (most likely).
First I need a passport though due to the new laws. So I could quickly move up the process for a passport. Something like 2 weeks or something instead of 10.
exciting!
Congratulations, Sportsdude. It's been a long time coming, and now it's arrived. Well done - may all go easily for you over the next few weeks.

How much does it cost to go to an in-state university in Missouri (I presume in-state means you're a resident of Missouri so don't pay out-of-state fees)?
I just checked the MUC web-site, and for International Students the tuition in an academic program (i.e., B.A. in Geography) is $4,626.21 USD ($5100 CAD) per semester (there are three semesters Fall 2007--starts September 4; Spring 2008--starts January 7; and Intersession 2008--starts May 5) so that'd be only $9,252.42 USD just for Sept-April.
And not including books, lab materials, school supplies, food, rent, furniture, daily survival needs... OMG, that was why I left Uni for a job! LOL
University of Missouri-Columbia (aka the party school where everyone is on the 6 year plan) This would be UBC equivalent.
[span class="t11px"]$6364 in state
[/span][span class="t11px"]$6977 for room and board
$13,361 a year
and if your an out of stater its over 20k.
I can't get into any Missouri schools because my ACT is very low and I've been through so many high schools I don't even have a GPA. lol
Other places I was looking at are 25k and 30k a year. I don't have that kind of money.
[/span]
But SD....that price doesn't include room and board. (the $5100). How can this be cheaper?
I think you're looking at another $4300 for residency fees. That's the cheapest of the lot for 3 semesters.
Check this out
[A href="vny!://www.malaspinaresidences.ca/fees.html"]vny!://www.malaspinaresidences.ca/fees.html[/A]
Do you have to maintain a certain GPA to maintain your acceptance in the college? I think that students outside the area have different requirements than ones who are Canadians.
I am still concerned with those numbers you have put up too because uni/college is verrrrry verrrrry expensive. And that's only tuition, not covering books and accomadation.
I know P.C. about the residence fees and board. We totaled it up yesterday night and its just under 15k.
Now compared to this other school in Minnesota at 30k a year and the school in Seattle at 25k a year. 15 k is cheap.
Are you planning to take out a student loan? I thought that you said that your parents don't have that kind of money?
I'm not trying to be discouraging at all.....just making sure you've covered all the bases so there will be no surprizes.
Yeah, my intentions are the same as PC, am not trying to discourage you. I mean, kudos to you for getting out of Misery state.
Was just having a little read on the site......
[A name=faqTwo][!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="faqQ2" --]When should I apply?[!-- InstanceEndEditable --][/A]
[!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="faqA2" --]You should apply for residence when you apply for admission to Malaspina.
Acceptance to Malaspina does not necessarily mean that you will be accepted in housing.

Sort of, here's what I found when I was searching for places in Canada. You'd go to the international student link. The requirements for all international students is basically to have high TOFELS or something in English and have a B in grade 12 English. But all the other schools had a 'but if you are american we want this this and this'. So its like a double standard if you will.
Malaspina treats everyone who is not from Canada as an international student. So there's no double standard. All they wanted was that I know english and got a B or C in Grade 12 english and I got an 88% B+. So I met the requirements.
For US schools they want people with above 3.0 top of the class, 21-28 on their ACT.
I don't have have a GPA, got my diploma through internet correspondance, a 16 on the ACT (i got an 18 but the ACT people 'lost' it).
So I don't have a lot going for me if you look at my transcript. If I were to guess my GPA's I had a 2.8 at the first high school, 2.5 at the second and a 3.5 at the third. My true GPA or what I'm capable is between 3.0-3.5. Problem with high school was that I never was motivated, except for science, history/geography, art, and english. My weak point is Math. I'm dumb at math.
And sure enough the ACT tests math not your history skills.
I mean I went 2 years in history/geography class getting above 100% on tests. I think my sophmore year my History grade was 120%. (did a bunch of extra credit on tests) I wrote a 7 page essay during a test on Animal Farm in History class freshman year. lol
My teacher told me I had to quit writing it was 3:30 class ended at 3pm and I would be late for football practise. lol
I'll do better in college because I can focus on what my strength's are.
I'll do better in college because I can focus on what my strength's are.
[/DIV]Do you know what courses are required for first year studies to get your degree in Urban Planning?
for student loans we'll have to go through a private student loan. I'm not covered by the US loan system.
But I've got enough money on my own for a semester right now. So my parents and I are coming up with a plan where I pay half and they pay half. The cost is low enough to the point that, that scenario can work out.
Today I'm going to apply for this UPS job that pays 10 bucks an hour on top of the money I make throwing papers which is somewhere around 1,600 a month if I work everyday which I'll start doing again. The UPS job would pay 800 a month. So this is do able.
(I've been working part time for a year so I could finish my high school work).

yes.
Cool. Sounds like you've got your bases covered. You're going for the Fall semester?
Yup. Funny, the letter says August 30 the semester 'commences' but a person I know that goes there was like 'its always after labour day' lol.
Its funny. When I first read I got in, I guess it didn't really hit me, now I'm super excited. lol
Okay so I printed out the housing form, and first semester payment form that's due before June 1st. Then they'll send me a class list and I pick my classes. lol
And somewhere between now and August I've got to tour the place. lol
fun!
Good on ya SD. You're very brave.
There's three options in the Geography field at Malaspina
Natural Resource Management
Urban Growth Management
General stream
I'm doing the Urban Growth because that's the eventual urban planning career path. My studies won't be named 'urban planning' until masters time. Then I get that urban planning label I'm striving for.
My goal is to get really good grades to where I can get accepted into UBC's Urban Planning Masters degree. They're really really really good. It'll be tough but I think I can do it.
lol, they have a link at UBC to area urban planning jobs and the two that caught my eye was the head director of urban planning for Surrey and New Westminster lol.
I keep joking with my friends I want to 'build cities in my image' lol, being a director would basically be that. lol hehe
I'm more into transportation urban planning. Like I have ideas about getting people out of there cars and on transit etc.
I envy Europe and Japan with there massive metro systems and high speed rail links.

What did you find out?
oh I printed off the application and I'll fill it out by the end of this week and send it off.
You can actually do the application right online SD. If I were you, this is one thing I wouldn't put off.
yeah I'll probably do the application online. Now that I think about it.
Alright did the online residence thing, so all that I have to do now is money order of 20 bucks. lol
I attended Malaspina way back in 84, then SFU till 87, then U Vic in 96 for an M. Ed.
Malaspina was the kicker though- small classes, interesting subjects, great instructors. Always remember going for a beer at the Six Mile after PoliSci classes with the instructor.
Malaspina is a great insurance against dropping out at the larger University- gets you in the heavy duty study mode.
Now I sail around San Francisco Bay on my 57 foot schooner.
Good Luck at Malaspina, enjoy and study hard.

Wow, only 20 dollars to apply for housing? At UBC it is 50.
Well, good luck with everything. Always good to read about someone venturing into higher education whether college or university and whatever age they are (did you hear about the [A href="vny!://www.nydailynews.com/news/wn_report/2007/04/29/2007-04-29_talk_about_old_school_.html"]95 year old woman getting her BA in History[/A] this month?). Hopefully after all the hype sports has in his head about Canada, its not too much of a letdown when he gets to the Island. He's got the country on a pedastal, whereas most Canadians would rather be somewheres else most days.
What about Rio? So many beaches and nitelife!

Just because you are unhappy with your life and want to run away, it does not mean "most Canadians".
If Canada doesn't meet SD's expectations, there's always Bosnia.
I'm one of the 'non-most'.....lol. I'm happy where I am.
ok, true, I shouldn't say 'all' Canadians.
It is just me, the USA is looking pretty sweet these days.
I am finding Canada is amazing, for its natural beauty only.
There is no identity in Canada, the only thing that unites Canadians is that we say we are "not Americans". But we have no culture/identity to call our own. That and that taxes are strangling. The opportunities are limited for professionals.
I wouldn't want to live in St. Louis either mind you, but live somewhere nice, like Northern California.
The Brain Drain is a reality, and there is a legitimate reason Canada's best and brightest move to the USA.
Anyways, I was out of line for saying 'all Canadians' want to be somewhere else. My apologies.
Canada is beautiful, but maybe the grass is greener elsewhere?
Have you lived on the prairies? Have you lived in a town with a population less than 1 million?
I have. The sense of community is much greater in smaller centers. If you're basing Canada on Vancouver life, you're missing a lot.[/DIV]

There is no identity in Canada, the only thing that unites Canadians is that we say we are "not Americans". But we have no culture/identity to call our own.
Well, I think about this often. I've said it before, I have no sense of patriotism and have alway held some kind of admiration for that of the US of A.
Having said that though, it's got nothing to do with 'distaste' for Canada....I just don't know what patriotism means or feels like.
As far as culture and identity, I think that's all smoke and mirrors, and means very little. I think it's some kind of excuse for not working toward having our own personal identities over a possible illusion of having an identity based on what a majority thinks our identity is. (I don't know this to be true....I don't even know if it makes sense....it's just what I feel).
I think what 'unites' people is simple old fashioned kindness....not that we all wave the same flag. (which is a bit contradictory of my admiration for the US's 'patriotism')
Go to or watch a Canucks game and when Mark Donnelly lowers the mic after the first verse of the anthem and the crowd starts singing.
You don't get goose bumps?
Go to or watch a Canucks game and when Mark Donnelly lowers the mic after the first verse of the anthem and the crowd starts singing.
You don't get goose bumps?
I don't know who the H-E-double-hockey-sticks Mark Donnelly is.
More often than not, I see the players fidgeting and gobbing on the ice while the anthem is being sung.......so no.....I can't say I've experienced a warm fuzzy during the anthem at a hockey game. I get goose bumps when I hear Charlotte Church sing, and I don't even like opera. It's hard to know what I'm looking for as far as a 'patriotic feeling' goes, because so many 'displays' of patriotism are just that.....displays.
Hi SD.
That's good news. We bypass Malaspina College during our time in Vancouver Island. I love the island folks. Very friendly. Good luck and congrats again.
Thanks Lise. :)
