My cousin requires bone marrow (see below):
Bone Marrow is needed for a Bone Marrow Transplant ASAP for 22-year-old James Lee Erlandsen. [/div] [div] [/div] [div]James was attending SFU and had nearly completed his degree in Geography when out of the blue, on February 1st, 2007, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia . He is part Chinese and Caucasian, and has no siblings. His bone marrow is rare, and he needs as many registrants as possible to find a potential match. The best chances for a match would be from Eurasian donors. Good luck in the search!
Even if you don't fit this particular description, register anyway. It is a simple thing that you can do to give someone a fighting chance at life. It's always tough to find a match so the more people registered the better. Your part in it is simple and the effects of your actions can be life altering for someone. Act now to potentialy save a life.Wow what a thought.
Good Luck Lil Me. :)
Best wishes for James Lee, Lil Me.
Halfies OR Wholies........please look into being a donor. Hubby's done it, and I don't know why I haven't. Thanks for the reminder !

can non-canadians sign up?
Contact the American Red Cross and join their registry. It will link to the international data base.
thanks!
Best wishes for your cousin. I hope they find a bone marrow replacement soon.
Thanks to everyone who has responded here or passed the message along to a potential donor. The posters have been printed and will hit the streets this week. And, I've talked to a very wonderful guy who has a ton of personal hapa contacts- some are media personalities.
My mom is working on a press release for the media, as well. Interestingly enough, Canadian Blood Services advised that media campaigns tend to bring in older female Caucasian donors. But who knows?
Keep spreading the word. It's important for people to realize, that they can tested and in the system for the ready should the need arise. I think it's sad, that 'we' have to go LOOKING for people when the situation becomes dire. The procedure to register is only a blood test. (actual donation procedure is a little more involved, but pretty minimal when you consider a life is being saved)
Again....good luck to your family Lil Me.
I'm sorry to hear of the need for bone marrow donations, Lil Me. I registered quite some time ago, but haven't been called yet. Good luck on the search, and on his full recovery. It is well worth the time to donate when it can save a life.
It's being circulated through office, church and organizational email trees. Channel M is picking up the story.
what's channel M?
it's a secret for people who live in Vancouver!
well let me in on it. ;)

haha
looked it up.
Looks like my kind of tv channel.
Hi, I don't mean to go off-topic, but people are calling LM a troll over at DV. LM, can you verify whether you posted this thread? Thanks! [A href="vny!://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=160070"]vny!://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=160070[/A]
Thanks for the heads up about the "troll" sitch. I went back to DV and explained myself.
Update: Jamie was on Channel M news yesterday, and the North Shore News is going to run a feature story. The posters are still going up in the community (another 1,000 ordered) and the emails have hit UBC med school students, SFU alumni and more school/corporate directories.
Update: Jamie was on CTV news on the weekend, and he's on City TV's breakfast show tomorrow morning.
hiya LM...even us...in the far reaches..have received news...we received a fax today...and have hung his info in our coffee room!
Hope they find a donor.
The cancer (leukemia) is in remission, according to Vancouver Sun's yesterday (or two days ago).
Yes, that's true Orca! It's a very positive sign, but the leukemia can return anytime without fresh bone marrow.
That's great that he's in remission, but as you say it could be temporary, and other people have urgent needs as well.
Registering for the program is simple, an information session and a basic blood test, if you are a potential match you will be asked to have more detaled blood work done.. I've been on the registry for almost 15 years and I have a universal blood type and have never been called, so it's obviously really tough to find a match.
Canadian Blood Services has a great ad running right now, even if you don't want to do the bone marrow registry, just giving blood is huge. Take a look, the person you help could be someone you love.

leukemia runs in my family (even though they say it can't). It took my grandpa, great grandpa and great uncle. So go figure.
Lukemia runs in my family as well.. as well as alcoholism and such..
I wish you and your loved ones the bestest miss lil me.
Take care of yourself and your family.
alcoholism is learned, based on environment; leukemia is biologically inherited
Actually alcoholism is a partially genetic disease.
problem is as soon as one buys into the disease model, one is more likely to follow down the same path as kin, as the mind takes on the approach "it's not my fault"
I think that's true. A double whammy with it being both inherent and genetic.
The best high is the adrenaline rush from vigarous exercise! Go for a jog and then enjoy.
how's the donor process going lil me?
Still going. Still processing samples. Thanks for asking.
How's James doing, BTW?
Doing well. Thanks for asking, Orca. He's continuing with his treatment, still looking for a bone marrow donor. Organizing a blood donor drive in support of James at the end of Aug.
I hope that he finds a suitable donor soon. I tried to help, I posted your message on [A href="vny!://vancouver.craigslist.org/com/"]craigslist community[/A] and on [A href="vny!://classifieds.virtualvancouver.com/announcements.html"]virtual vancouver announcements[/A].
Any good news?
Just a quick note to tell everyone that the stem cell and marrow registry has been updated to [a href="vny!://www.onematch.ca%20"]vny!://www.onematch.ca[/a]
and the process for joining the registry is easier than ever. Attended the OneMatch launch party at Metrotown today with DJ Flipout and local talent from hiphopcanada.com.
Here's the deal...Spend about 5mins online filling out some forms, then give some saliva samples. That's it! NO NEEDLES!!

Excellent !!! Thanks for the update Lil Me.
how's the process going lil me?
No match yet. But the cancer is in remission. He's finishing his last course at SFU and started working again. So far, so good.
that's great news! (about the remission and sfu)
I stumbled upon a story of James through a search.....curious to know how he is doing Lil Me. Any updates ?
His health is quite good, P.C. Thanks for asking. He continues to take a daily chemo pill. He was off work for a while before Xmas due to knee problems, but he's back now.
That is SO wonderful to hear ! Will he have to take medication forever ?
