Fury at Howard HIV entry ban call
Aids charities have reacted angrily to Australian Prime Minister John Howard's opposition to HIV-positive immigrants moving to Australia. Mr Howard proposed a blanket ban, which would only be exempt in special cases, during a radio interview in Melbourne. [/p] Australian HIV activists said the country's immigration laws already had tight restrictions. [/p] The UK's National Aids Trust described the proposal as illegal, discriminatory and ineffective. [!-- E SF --] [/p] 'Impractical to enforce' [/p] Mr Howard was asked about the issue during a visit to Melbourne, in Victoria state, which has seen a sharp rise in HIV cases. [/p] Infectious diseases spetgwpdt Dr Chris Lemoh called it "a hysterical overreaction, it mixes racism with a phobia about infectious disease", according to the Associated Press news agency. [/p] "To not allow people to come on the basis of any health condition is immoral, it's unethical and it's impractical to enforce."[/p]
Victoria's public health officials have blamed the rise in HIV cases partly on overseas immigrants, but also on Australian residents relocating from other parts of the country. [/p] "I think we should have the most stringent possible conditions in relation to that nationwide, and I know the health minister is concerned about that and is examining ways of tightening things up," Mr Howard said.

They should be stopped from entering. Why should the taxpayers in that country be responsible for some sick person's health.
I 100% agree. Why should the persons in that country pay for the newcomers to live happily?
Child sex slaves who get rescued from hell, in Southeast asia go to Austrialia to start a new life. Most have HIV. So are you going to be the one to tell a 13 year old who has been through hell, that "sorry your not allowed".

The world is full of injustices. Shit happens. Are certain countries suppose to support the world.

OMG! They're going to ban blankets in Australia? What's next? Pillows and sheets?
okay fine. That doesn't mean I still don't like it. Define 'special cases'.
He mentions South Victoria province I believe, thats home to Melborne or Sydney giant huge gay communities almost as big as San Fransisco. And when the laws are already really tough why come out with this law?
Every country should have the legal and moral ground to refuse entry to anybody they so desire. I remember a case in Canada a little while back about a lady from Africa who was really sick. They thought she had Ebola. Yet they still allowed her to land and be brought immediately to the emergency at great expense to the tax payers.

LOL 'bless' Lil Me... I just picked up on your comment.
This thread is a textbook case of political correctness gone wild. Whether I like Howard or not, he does not "hate" HIV immigrants. He is just trying to protect Australia and Australians. Yelling "racism" does not erase a nation's duty to guard itself, whether against invasion, or terrorism, or epidemics.

The world is full of sick and desperate people. No one country is able nor is it responsible to care for all that ails the world. The problem with the world today is political correctness. Just look at Africa. They never had it so good when they were ruled by a white goverment. From South Africa to Rhodesia, they were countries of stability and plenty. Fast forward to modern day and you have nothing but chaos and famine and disease. These are the people that are trying to enter Australia and North America. I say they made their mess, let them wallow in it.
No one country is able nor is it responsible to care for all that ails the world. The problem with the world today is political correctness.
Although I have yet to be able to come to any conclusion of how I feel about this, I think what I see as more of a problem with world today, is a diminishing lack of compassion.
*I'm not pointing any fingers, for sure.....just a general observation.
Why pick on Australia, I think the US already has this ban

IT IS NOT RACIST!
AUSTRALIA ACCEPTS PEOPLE FROM ALL COUNTRIES IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR BACKGROUND.
VERY FEW COUNTRIES DO THE SAME.
SHOW SOME RESPECT!
Why should Australian taxpayers be responsible for expensive-to-treat disease(s) coming in from foreigners? Yes, there can be special cases, but Australia can't take care of everyone. The PM is trying to protect his people here (some might call it selfish), and at the same time the taxes that would have gone to treat the infected immigrants could go towards improving their hospitals, schools, etc.
Some might call it selfish.....others might call it protective.
Tough call. Not a decision I would want to be responsible for.
It is also election year in Australia and Howard needs all the points he can score right now.
Aussie has many stories of penniless migrants who came here and did well. We support a fair go however we have to draw the line somewhere. We simply can't support the world.
