Title: Can we sue Microsoft?
Post by: this isnt right on Apr 12 07 04:39
I hate the automatic updates. I turned off automatic updates in my control panel. Microsoft kept trying to make me install something called Microsoft Genuine Advantage, which they tried to sugarcoat and make sounding like it was to "help me" to know that my windows was legitimate (which it is). I don't want this software, it is spyware in my opinion, it connects to the internet to send information on my system to Microsoft, and I choose not to do this.

Anyways, I had turned off automatic updates, and it was trying to trick me to install it anyways, by putting an "install updates now" choice thing ALONG with my shut down computer thing (if you read the fine print there was a little spot where you could click to shut down without installing)...anyways, I did that, keeping auto updates off, and declining to install this Genuine Advantage crap. Well today, a prompt kept popping up saying 'your computer will restart automatically to install updates".... I checked on 'restart later', but this is crap! I then checked my control panel on automatic updates and lo and behold Microsoft somehow had this turned on to automatic again. Bastards.

of course, this is a principle thing, shouldnt we have control over our own systems? Basically, somehow Microsoft set this up to connect to the internet without my express intended permission and download and install software on my system. They deserve to be sued.

I just had a thought that it might have been Norton that turned the updater back on without my permission. Dammit all of this out of control software getting way too big for its britches.

what bothers me is this kind of intrusion can easily become the norm and even more pervasive where content in many facets of our lives will be under some kind of control... media of all kinds, chips in music players, video, television,... anonymity or privacy in communications, emails, etc could be compromised, etc

I used to keep all my emails, now I just delete them right after I've read them.

You never know. :-/

Makes one wonder why we need the technology, if it just creates more problems for us.

I haven't had automatic updates for a while now.
They seemed to drastically go away when I switched to firefox.
They will go permanently away when I get that new iMac down the road.

I get them too.  They want to find out if my copy of Microsoft is legal.

I don't bother opening their 'updates'.

I would like to.. cause I cant figure out how to get rid of that virus called MSN messenger. For some reason when I installed the new version, the old version stayed there and they BOTH load up. When I close out the newest one.. the old one is still running even though it doesnt show it on my windows task manager. It annoys me... especially when I sent in a complaint and asked what to do.. and they told me to bring it to a Microsoft approved place and get them to look into it. Twits....

Off topic a little, but whatever you do, don't install Smiley Centrals!!

They run spywares also known as MyWebSearch & FunWebProducts.

Mexican telecom giant CEO founder, still lives in one house, doesn't travel much, ripped the two for saying charity doesn't solve the problems government action does.
