Title: Sleeper spammer accounts on DS?
Post by: Moolah! on Mar 09 07 03:02
Recently I noticed a rise in the number of registrations here.

They're not familiar nicknames from DV though. (Granted, not everyone on DS must come from DV. Only 99% does.) [A onclick="addImg('icon/icon_smile_wink.gif')" href="jvascript:void(0)"](//vny!://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/icon_smile_wink.gif)[/A]

The reason why I'm bringing this up is because the nicknames I'm seeing are quite reminiscent of a strategy I saw on a Yahoo group I manage. And they look very much like spammer accounts.

Take this one for example:

[A href="vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=295"]vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=295[/A]

What kind of nickname is that?

Another telltale sign is these accounts don't talk much. You don't even see them online reading the threads...

The account is created. Then it's left to sleep.

Until the day when they become an active cell and suddenly start spamming the board.

(//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Teasing/15.gif)  In some cases I've seen accounts sleeping between 5-8 months before they start spewing garbage.

Could this happen here? Is this what's going on with the recent weird looking registration names?

Yes, we get these all the time, often from *.ru, *.pl, and *.de addresses. I usually clean them out right away before the "user" confirms the account with email activation, but I've been busy lately.
