Went down 300 points in 20 seconds around 2pm et. Went to 500 points down and finished at 400 points down. All because of a Communist Party meeting in China. That sent the Hong Kong and Shangai markets down and of course since the american economy is being propped up by the Chinese Yen we fell hard as well. brilliant.

However I would not recommend you follow that strategy.

one of the worst hit was Caterpillar stocks (the diesel engine manufacturer).. this is because they have heavily invested in china.
I would suggest them.. they are one of the biggest and most reliable engine manufacturers in the world.

It's bound to happen a Chinese slow down. Right now what is going on in China is unsustainable. The problem is China now basically runs the world it is the economic engine. What will happen when the economic growth slows and stops? Global recession?
Stock analysts were acting very strange last night. Edward Jones main analyst (EJ is based here) was like oh its no big deal if we see a 10% correction this week that's is very healthy. A loss of 10% in a week!!! That's is nuts and definately NOT healthy, what are these people smoking?!

Possibly. Unless another market (perhaps India?) takes over the lead and compensates for the diminishing Chinese demand for energy, raw materials, and consumer products.

They're speaking statistically, that's why. They won't (and can't be reasonably expected to) admit that it's a correction until the markets drop by 20%.

They acted like it if was to continue it was no big deal. lol
The world markets just can't switch like that. The chinese for example are basically holding up the U.S. economy. It just can't switch over night. If China is going to go down the rest of the world is going to go down with it.

pheeew! what a relieve.........the US market recovered slightly and didn't continue spiralling downward. Now for the European and Asian markets to bounce back so I could stay on track with plans for early retirement
Did anyone buy any Chinese stock when it went down?
I wouldn't buy any Chinese stocks unless the company is also listed in an American Exchange. They don't have the same kind of reporting and accounting rules as western markets.
I participate and take advantage of their growth by investing in mutual funds that invest in asian markets and let professional fund managers figure all these out.
I see. Hmm. I thought people would be buying Chinese stock left and right when it went down. Shows you what I know.
Hey 49er, what do you think about India in general? Will it become the next super power in the world of finance?
depends. The thing India has going for it is that its not communist. Thing India doesn't have going for it is that its not China or Vietnam in terms of sexy places to invest.

I don't have any thoughts on India. Fortunately for me and my co-workers the company that manages our 401K (your RRSP) offers a great selection of international mutual funds. We also have a committee that is made up of savvy investors in our company making recommendations on adding or dropping funds from this selection. All of us who have put our money in the 4 international funds that are offered have done extremely well in the past 4 years.
By the way, looking at the major holdings lists of these funds, I don't see any Indian companies on the lists.
Just from the top of my head India, even though not communist, have the caste system which could get in the way of it becoming a major finance superpower.

CAT just made an appearance on StockScouter's Top-10 picks list. Maybe you're on the right track. [A onclick="addImg('icon/icon_smile_cool.gif')" href="jvascript:void(0)"](//vny!://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/icon_smile_cool.gif)[/A]
Analyst consensus seems to be Hold.
Yeah, most heavy industries like mining, power generation, large engine driven pumps, engines on vessels, etc etc.. have CAT engines. Theres three major engines used in these industries, Caterpillar, Cummins, and Detroit Deisels(or larger versions are called EMD's(ElectroMotive Division) owned by General Motors). The two major ones are Detroit Diesels and Caterpillar. caterpillar sells their engines through dealers like Finning here in BC and Alberta.. big in mining, and industry like earthmovers.. building the sea to sky for example.

Excellent strategy. People should bet the farm on one equity. Because it can only go up, right? You'll get to places fast. Thumbs up.
