Title: Lunch - Silence or dentention!!
Post by: Lise on Jan 27 07 04:09
OK. At first I thought this is ridiculous but after reading it some more, why, yes... it does make sense. Don't eat and talk during lunch time. Kinda hard because that's the only time when you can gossip and talk to friends. *choke... cough cough*

WARWICK, R.I. - The chapel isn't the only place where silence is expected at one Rhode Island Catholic school. The Saint Rose of Lima School in Warwick has new lunch rules that require students to remain silent during lunch.

The move comes after three recent choking incidents in the school cafeteria.

All three students are fine -- but school Principal Jeannine Fuller said in a letter to parents that "the school's priority is the safety of each child."

The letter says all students must remain silent during lunch. Students who don't follow the policy will receive a lunch detention.

Providence Diocese spokesman Michael Guilfoyle says the school is enacting a temporary safety measure. He says the school doesn't expect complete silence but enough quiet to keep students safe.

Well, as much as it's impolite to talk with your mouth full, it's perfectly acceptable to have conversation between bites.  As a matter of fact, it's down right healthy.  I was almost on board, until they played the 'safety' card.  Surely to goodness they'll have to learn the fine art of eating and talking SOMEWHERE along the lines.

I wonder if the next step would be to puree their food....in the interest of safety of course.

Even safer through a stomach tube.  And they wouldn't be talking very much, either

Good question, kingy.  I'm not sure if it makes much difference though.

I stayed in a monastery where all the meals were taken in silence - however the monks cheated by using sign language.
