Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that...
Post by: Lise on Dec 21 06 01:07
This was on DV a while back ago. See if you can guess the correct answer.

    I turn polar bears white
and I will make you cry.
I make guys have to pee
and girls comb their hair.
I make celebrities look stupid
and normal people look like celebrities.
I turn pancakes brown
and make your champane bubble.
If you squeeze me, I'll pop.
If you look at me, you'll pop.
Can you guess the riddle?

97% of Harvard graduates can not figure this riddle out, but 84% of kindergarten students were able to figure this out in 6 minutes or less. Can you guess the correct answer?

PC!!!! You got it!!!!! (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/21.gif)

This riddle was posted on the net as one of the hardest to solve out there. PC must be super brainy... of course we've always known that. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

  From a poster on DV......

Polar bears are white because the pressure at the poles is low, so they have to be able to absorb heat.

Pressure makes you cry if it's too much.

Pressure in your bladder makes you have to pee.

Peer pressure makes girls comb their hair...Otherwise we wouldn't bother!

Celebrities usually crack under pressure.

Many normal people will shine under pressure.

Pancakes turn brown thanks to pressure generated by the heat.

Champagne will bubble until the pressure of the carbonation has disappeared.

If you squeeze something under pressure, BAM, there it goes.

If you are "looking" at pressure, you're in it, like in an airplane, and your ears pop.

Aww Shucks.  Well, I may have guessed the right answer, but believe me, I don't get it.

We only comb our hair because of peer pressure ???

I'm with you TehBorken.  After deciding there was nothing that addressed every one of those, I also decided the correct answer was, No.....I can't.

I have some serious doubts, that 84% of kindergarten students came up with  'pressure' as their answer.

On second thought, I think you guys might be right afterall. The answer is most probably 'NO'. You were right, PC. Sorry.

Don't be sorry......the thing about the kindergarten kids answering it was an afterthought.

Polar bears are white because the pressure at the poles is low, so they have to be able to absorb heat.

In a word, no. The pressure at the poles is not low, and it has nothing to do with heat absorption. [em]

Peer pressure makes girls comb their hair...Otherwise we wouldn't bother!

[/em]This is really reaching, and not very beliveable. Girls comb their hair for lots of reasons, but I doubt peer pressure is one of them. It's not why you comb your hair, is it?
[em]

Pancakes turn brown thanks to pressure generated by the heat.

[/em]Nope, they turn brown because the sugars in the flour and bread [a href="vny!://en.mimi.hu/gastronomy/carmelize.html"]carmelize[/a] and change their refractive index, just like when you make toast.
[em]

If you squeeze something under pressure, BAM, there it goes.

[/em]No, not always. Again, this is really reaching in my humble opinion.
[em]

If you are "looking" at pressure, you're in it, like in an airplane, and your ears pop.

[/em]Arg, stop already. This is silly at best and completely ridiculoous at worst. "Looking at pressure"? C'mon, pressure is a quality, not something that can be directly observed.

Title: Whose Fish?
Post by: TehBorken on Dec 23 06 07:07
Here's a puzzle from Coudal Partners, titled "Whose Fish?" supposedly created by Albert Einstein: [blockquote] This brainteaser, reportedly written by Einstein is difficult and Einstein said that 98% of the people in the world could not figure it out. Which percentage are you in?

There are five houses in a row in different colors. In each house lives a person with a different nationality. The five owners drink a different drink, smoke a different brand of cigar and keep a different pet, one of which is a Walleye Pike.

The question is– who owns the fish?
[em]Hints:
1. The Brit lives in the red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Dane drinks tea.
4. The green house is on the left of the white house.
5. The green house owner drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Malls keeps birds.
7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhills.
8. The man living in the house right in the center drinks milk.
9. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
10. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the one who smokes Dunhills.
12. The owner who smokes Bluemasters drinks beer.
13. The German smokes Princes.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.[/em][/p] [em]There are no tricks, pure logic will get you the correct answer. And yes, there is enough information to arrive at the one and only correct answer. [/em][/p] [/blockquote] Sure enough, Coudal has the answer (and [a href="vny!://www.coudal.com/theotherfish.php"]another puzzle[/a] for those smart enough to figure this one out): [a href="vny!://www.coudal.com/thefish.php"]Link[/a][/p]
