Title: Phobias
Post by: Gopher on Nov 15 06 11:21
I know a girl who is terrified of cotton wool. Anyone know of any other unusual phobias?

I know several who's deadly afraid of the dentist. I had one patient who wouldn't even sit on the chair. Several who hyperventilate before coming in. Some cried during procedures, some vomited..... I see them all.

I'm pretty phobic about dentists as well, although I think that heights have to take pride of place.

Heights and dentists, no problemo. I used to skydive. I always wanted to have a cavity filled on the way down, too, but....

My phobias are being shot at close range and seeing my ex-wife. There's a good chance both of those could happen at the same time, lol.

She's so mean, she signed me up for a bridge club and told me I'd get to jump next week. She once fell down a huge hole in the ground and came shooting back up two minutes later with a Return Receipt from Satan.

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.

Prolonged applause for the rant of the week. Well done!

Lol, thank you.

No lie though, she did try to hire a hit man through a girl she knew who worked at a biker bar. I'm not kidding. The girl was so rattled she called the Snohomish County Sherrif's Department and filed a report on her. I'm absolutely serious. She also tried to take out a shitload of life insurance on me without my knowledge at about the same time. No BS, it's all documented.

I guess I just bring out the best in some people....

Think I was kidding? Here's a minor excerpt from my parenting evaluation written by the evaluator (part of of the process that decided custody). "MS SMITH" is my ex, "John" is my son who was 2 at the time. It's the abstract of an interview with a friend of my ex ("Alice Black"):
[span class="norm"]
"Alice Black", Family Acquaintance and ex-roommate

MS. Black reports that she has known MS. SMITH since shortly after "John" was born. They met through a mutual friend. She reports a very conflicted relationship with MS. SMITH. Among her statements are these: That MS. SMITH spanked "John" with a wooden spoon; MS. SMITH said to "John" "Go ahead and hit Alice with that stick, be like every other man." "John" was often sick; "John" was seen playing with MS. SMITH's loaded gun in the house; MS. SMITH left Mr. SMITH three days after meeting and dating a man in a bar where Alice worked. MS. SMITH has had several car accidents and that she drives very aggressively and MS. Black is concerned for "John"'s safety when he is with her in the car; "John" was seldom with MS. SMITH during the time when they lived together; MS. SMITH baby sat for her and that money and other things were missing from the house and she suspects MS. SMITH took those things; MS. SMITH was always plotting to hurt people, such as suing them. MS. SMITH is overly litigious; MS. SMITH asked her on at least two occasions if she knew a hit man who could take care of MR. SMITH; MS. SMITH took her to court for domestic violence and for stealing a gun and candlesticks from her (the candlesticks were inexpensive brass) MS. SMITH seemed inappropriately jealous of Alice's friends. MS. Black reports being afraid for her life because of MS. SMITH; "There is still a gun out there." MS. SMITH gets weird when she feels cornered; "The evaluator should have a metal detector." It should be noted that MS. Black is in a conflicted relationship with MS. SMITH as evidenced by court action. [/span]

I have a fear of heights does that count?

That being said the only thing you can do about that is to confront your fear. I still work and do things at great heights but Im SLOW up there. I also used to rock climb to help confront my fear. I froze a number of times when I was climbing in different places, but forced myself to get moving, Im a lot better now than I ever was. Before that I would freeze and that would be it.

I have a total fear of snakes.  They could be the most harmless garter snake and I would be absolutely petrified with fear.  I tried to walk through a snake exhibit one time and fainted.  They had to carry me out, and when I came to I was shaking like a leaf.  So much for meeting one's phobias head on.  Just because the snakes were behind glass didn't mean they wouldn't break out and go after me, or at least so I imagined in my terror.

Claustrophobia and enochlophobia. (had to look those up)    Not big on the enclosed spaces or crowds.

it isnt so much that i fear heights, it is more the fear of falling from the height!

people aren't really afraid to fly, it is that they are afraid of 'not' flying.

All too true to look at it like that. I will remember that, thanks.

I agree also kingy.  I've always said, it's not flying that scares me, it's the sudden stops.

passing a semi on a two lane country road.
ice on a mountain road where if you go off the road you go down a cliff.
fear of being pushed off a bridge/tall building. (i'm not afraid of heights though)
afraid of being shot by drunk country folk (grew up around guns, country people when they get drunk do stupid things)
getting bitten by a poisonous snake (this summer we found a rattle snakes nest behind my cousins house bit my cousins boxer in the eye 7ft long rattle snake)
bobcats/coyotes (bobcats sit in trees at night)
walking in the woods alone (see bobcats, snakes etc)
getting t-boned in my car because if it happend I will die (I don't have side airbags)

Airports for some reason I can't stand airports. I love flying in planes just hate the airports. I start to freak out when waiting for a flight. Although it only happens in noisy airports. For example I was at SeaTac and I loved it. But my home airport I start freaking out.  The more mallish type feel the mall has the better I feel.

I remember a few years back when somebody's pet boa constrictor got loose somewhere on Commercial Drive.  I even cancelled my doctor's appointment because his office was in that area.

yup lise, I saw it. *shivers* then there's the water snakes in the lake behind my cousins house as well oh and SNAPPING TURTLES  gawd  I hate those varmits.

I'm against animal cruelty but not when it comes to coyotes and snapping turtles. I'm sorry but I've had way too many run ins with snapping turtles. Did some nasty stuff to those mean things before. I love turtles but I'm sorry when I find I snapping turtle I have to kill it. Those things are dangerous.

I'm clausterphobic too Lil Me.

I'm uncomfortable in huge crowds.....don't think it's an actual phobia....I just don't like it.

I'm also not good at being away from home.  Again, not a phobia....just a discomfort thing.
Title: Re: Phobias
Post by: Lil Me on Apr 16 07 09:41
I think I'm almost exactly the same as you!

I never used to be claustrophobic- it's getting worse as I get older.  Won't go into caves or mazes.

I don't like crowds.  I go wiggy at Metrotown or the PNE.

Travel is ok, though.  I don't mind being away from home.

But...I like my own bathroom.  I'll often drive home instead of "going" at the mall.

ROFL.....That's me in a nutshell.  I've turned around and headed home as soon as I arrived over this issue.  Hahahaaaa

I don't get the 'homesick' thing all the time.  But every once in a while, it'll just hit me.....I have to go HOME NOW......and I do.  It's trickier when I'm on the mainland, and I have to suck it up if there's no ferry....lol

Here's one more:

I can't drink bathroom water.  I will walk to the kitchen sink in the middle of the night to get a drink.  Mr LM thinks I need to be in therapy over this one! :)

Same here, as a kid I'd never go to the restroom at those interstate rest stops. I just wait til I get to the motel/hotel.

I have to agree with Devil here. I dont want to die slowly, causing me pain as well as any family I might have.

I want all accounts settled so theres nothing from me hanging about. A Bang, Crash, or Explosion is the way I want to go..

Agreed, if nukes ever go off, run towards the explosion, not away!

I am also afraid of empty pizza boxes.

I just want to die a fast painless death... ^^^ .... back in the day, a quick, unexpected death was not considered desireable .. because one could not settle family affairs properly .. on the other hand, lyeing in bed and suffering was also considered terrible.

Therefore, the best death for them was slow..yet painless .. strange huh . gofig

My financial planner/insurance guy is a personal friend, so I'm going to assume he will drag his butt off the golf course and take care of business if I kick the bucket.
