Found this link on another site from someones trip to N Korea. I found it interesting. Reminded me of parts of china in the countryside when I was there.

Wow, those are amazing photos and thanks for sharing that link you found with us. I've never been to Asia yet but someday I will go.
fascinating.
Reminds its looks like Cherynobyl minus the nuclear melt down. With all the communist relics.
Intersting. Great link, Russ. I've heard in N.Korea, you can't take images of the 'poorer' side of the country but you could take images of the Great Leader no probs.
Glad you liked the link. I was shocked by how it was there in the pictures, but I have seen some stuff like that when I was in China. Not as bad in the cities, but more like that in the outlying poor areas.
I would love to go visit China one of these days though I'm not so sure about visiting the poorer parts of that country though. North or South Korea.... not on my list. It's getting to be pretty dicey there nowadays.
Wonderful photos.
I feel a little depressed now, but thank you so much for linking them!
Me I want to visit Japan.
Japan's also on my 'one day' agenda. That apart, thanks for 'giving' us these photos - terrifically interesting!
I would love to spend a month or two exploring the British Isles and Ireland. I watch the "Antiques Road Show" from the BBC and there are so many places that look interesting.
Which places in particluar, Kitten?
Nothing in particular, really. I'd like to take a bus tour and stop in various places to explore for a day, and then move on. The Cottswolds are beautiful. I'd love to tour a single-malt distillery in Scotland, or go in to listen to the music in an Irish pub. Travel through some small towns in Wales. So many places are fascinating because of their history. It would be the sort of trip filled with accidental discoveries that would keep my mind smiling for years to come.
The Cotswolds ARE nice, but I prefer the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District. Wales is SUPERB.
Oh, for a winning lottery ticket. That would be the trip of a lifetime for me.
Must go. I'm a bit late, but since I'm the boss it won't matter too much. I prefer to be punctual where possible.
Same as me, I'm the boss too and I still start to panic if I don't get there at my self-appointed time. Crazy, isn't it?
a great bbc show that I like that shows a lot of cities is a real estate buying/finding a home show on Sundays mornings called Location Location. One episode they did a family looking to finding a house in Bath. lovely.
Been to Bath. What a place!!! Love the old Roman bath or hot springs or whatever you called them... can't remember, so long ago. Still a worthwhile place to go to if you ever get the chance.
yeah another place I need to go to is the gulag my grandmother was in, in eastern Poland. Sometime.
I didn't know you had a Polish background there, SD.
No I don't have a polish background. I'm german/hungarian. Grandma was picked up by the soviets and placed in a forced labour working camp in Eastern Poland working in coal mines for 3 years
Oh my.... I think you said that somewhere. Sorry, I forgot. Your grandmother still with you, SD? She must have stories to tell.
Yup she lives in Florida.
Crazy smart, SD. It means you take responsibility seriously. By the way, I made it to work on time. The lights were in my favour for a change.
The lights were in your favour? Really? You cant live in Van then. When I go to school for my engineering upgrade from South Van over the Second Narrows to Lonsdale Quay, I get every blasted red light. 'Specially when Im running a few minutes late cause the coffee was set on auto and I forgot to put something minor like the coffee grounds in.. and of course I have to wait.
Can I ask what you do? Or is that a taboo thing on here? Im finding that DS is alot more open than DV ever was.
I throw papers at night, I go to work in an 1hr and a half and I'm a student finishing up some school work so I can go to school next year in Seattle!
The lights switch to outgoing traffic in Burnaby around noon, and my patient lives only ten minutes away on a normal day. I made it in six minutes. I'm still surprised.
I'm a caregiver to an Alzheimer patient. It is a challenging job, but mentally very rewarding when I can make her comfortable and content.
When I go to school for my engineering upgrade from South Van over the Second Narrows to Lonsdale Quay, I get every blasted red light.
Oh cool, another Vancouverite! So, you must wear that iron ring on your pinkie....
You don't have to tell me about traffic lights.... bah humbug.... couple that with all the construction that's going on and you have the perfect morning. *sarcasm* Oh btw, just read that construction will go into the fall and winter. Brilliant.
I wish I worked closer to home like you, kitten. Woulda been excellent to find a dentist much, much closer to home but most of them are crap here.
And in Richmond, we have some of the most horrific crazy drivers compared to other cities. Yes, I'm dissing my own kind. Many of them can not simply drive.
Downtown Vancouver is pretty crazy too but not as bad as Richmond.
Oh yeah, purelife. Crazy Chinese drivers. They bring their damn driving skills here and make us all cry. I can diss them all I want to cause I'm Chinese but seriously, I hate Richmond.
Totally agree Lise. I diss my own kind very often. I'm thoroughly disgusted. For example, their manners. Gosh, I could go on and on....
Tell me about it. They're so gawd-damn materialistic (my sister in HK can attest to that) and not to mention arrogant. They cake to survival of the fittest but you don't bring that kinda BS to Vancouver and expect the rest to put up with you.
*meow* claws extending
I could have sworn I'd seen this before, and I had....right here, in fact, back in June. (//forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/14.gif)

The Know-It-Alls arrogant SOB's!

Never give up hope, Kitten. You never know what's round the corner.
Not knowing what's around the corner can also be a cause for pessimism.
I agree, but I am of the opinion that if you look for bad things you find them, and vice versa.
I prefer to look for good things, such as a chance to spend time in the British Isles.
LOL, I dont know about driving. On one hand you can say bad drivers, on the other hand look at china, it was mayhem but theres only been cars available for a few years now and everyone seems to have one. Everyones not used to it, give it a generation and I am sure there will be no problem. In my opinion thats part of the problem with richmond, and everyone seems to blame asians for bad driving cause thats the visible majority. Theres some bad drivers everywhere in every race. That being said I avoid richmond at all costs (along with downtown mind you), but I do love Richmond Sushi...
Uh, purelife. lol, what do you mean by iron ring on my finger? and oh great another vancouverite?
Anyhow, back to the schoolwork.
Hey Russ, heard of Richmond Sushi.... that place any good? Where the heck is it? We tried to look for it one day then gave up. Do they have all-u-can-eat?
People can't drive here. I think is an epidemic everywhere to be honest.
Uh, purelife. lol, what do you mean by iron ring on my finger? and oh great another vancouverite?
Earlier, you mentioned that you were upgrading your Engineering courses. And I found out that Engineers wear this little iron ring on their pinky finger to distinguish that they are Engineers.
What I meant from another Vancouverite was that I'm from Vancouver as well and I just post on this Seattle forum because I don't like DV as much as I used to. It's just funny to see more and more Vancouverites are on here, that's all.
Wow, those photos have been haunting me all day.
And then a weird thing happened, I dropped by my local library and wandered over to the manga shelf.
My eye was immediately drawn to a hard cover book that seemed out of place.
It's called Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea. It's a graphic novel from this Quebec artist named Guy Delisle, and the thing is simply amazing.
He makes the same sort of observations as the photographer this thread is dedicated to, but it's so very cool to see the same things in cartoon form.
Plus, the insights are a little more in-depth since Guy had to work in North Korea for 2 months. The book is dark by its nature, but the author's humor shines through on every page.
Highly recommended. Go to your library at once!!! The Great Leader commands it! ;)
I don't know if I'd find it tenkani anything written by a Canadian or about Canada is banned in my library.
Only funny thing at the library is that next to Bill O'Rielly books is George Orwell's novels. lol

I thought thats what you meant by that.. Im actually a marine engineer, and I got my training through PMTC, a branch of bcit, so no ringy thing for me :( . I thought you were being sarcastic about me being from Vancouver.. Id thought I was in the middle of an old joke, id asked that kinda impishly. I agree, when I stopped posting/browsing on DV I went more to the offroading websites. I actually was googling discover vancouver to see touristy type things as out of country friends were coming to visit and discover seattle came up.. clicked on it cause Im one of those curious types and saw many names from DV. Thats why im here now.
miss Lise, Richmond Sushi is 1488-8388 Capstan Way. Tel: 604-207-7778.

Always a lineup, expect to have to wait 10 minutes at least for a table. All you can eat is awesome there, after 8 its cheaper. They started that to use up all the unused food from during the day.. but now they sell more at night then the day.
Sorry.. I wrote this a few hours ago from when im posting this, I got called away to help my brother load a neighbors tree stump into my truck? How it was my truck and how i was involved with his deal with the neighbor i have no idea. But heres some info if you didnt know, the transfer station along kent street below marine drive in south van is free dumping until the end of tomorrow. So along with the stump im filling up my truck with junk.
Hey Russ dude, thanks for the info.(//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Love/16.gif) Am always looking out to try new stuff.
Hey Russ,
Sorry, I had no intentions of sounding sarcastic when I mentioned that there was another Vancouverite here. I meant it in a good way. Glad that that's clarified now. (//forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/11.gif)
Marine Engineer? What do you do specifically, if you don't mind me asking? Sounds rather interesting.
I googled it, purelife.
Marine engineering
[DIV id=bodyContent]
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[!-- start content --] [DL] [DD] [DIV class=dablink]The term marine engineer can also refer to a designer who specializes in the design and building of [A class=new title="Marine machinery" href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marine_machinery&action=edit"]marine machinery[/A].[/DIV][/DD][/DL] Marine Engineers are the officers of a ship that operate and maintain the propulsion and other systems onboard the vessel. Marine Engineering staff also deal with the "Hotel" facilities onboard, notably the [A title=Sewage href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sewage"]sewage[/A], lighting, [A title="Air conditioning" href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_conditioning"]air conditioning[/A] and water systems. They deal with bulk fuel transfers, and require training in [A title=Firefighting href="vny!://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefighting"]firefighting[/A] and first aid, as well as in dealing with the ship's boats and other nautical tasks- especially with cargo loading/discharging gear and safety systems, though the specific cargo discharge function remains the responsibility of deck officers and deck workers.

Well, Lise hit the nail on the head. thats a pretty good description. I was in China helping supervise ships being built, and now I am sailing on some of them back off the West African coast.. I work offshore Angola.
You are going to laugh Lise, but you influenced me.. I went to Richmond Sushi last night with my g/f.
Russ, my boy.... had I been more of an influence in your life, your sex life would be screaming rather loudly by now. (//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/3.gif)
You should call this thread THE GETTING TO KNOW RUSS THREAD.
LOL Lise....always thinking about sex. ;)

purelife, my darling goddess - what else is there to think about? I personally put the blame of Sir Tenkani.
Well, to be honest I was laughing about the total turnabout off topic of this thread until I remembered lots of the other threads where they all rapidly changed so I dont feel so bad, lol.
Sex, well, um, I have no complaints so.. ah. Yeah.
I cant believe it, you made me speechless. Thats not easy. lol.
