Title: Restaurant Closures in BC
Post by: Lise on Jul 15 06 07:54
OK, if you're easily grossed out, don't go here. This site will give you a list of the restaurant closures in Burnaby/ New Westminster/ Surrey/ Maple Ridge etc.

[A href="vny!://www.fraserhealth.ca/HealthInfo/PublicHealth/HealthProtection/FoodEstablishmentClosures.htm"]vny!://www.fraserhealth.ca/HealthInfo/PublicHealth/HealthProtection/FoodEstablishmentClosures.htm[/A]   Too bad one of my fav. dim sum restaurant is listed in here. Not once but twice. Now I have to find some other place.

Here's a site to restaurant closures in Vancouver.

Some that stand out to me:

The first one:

Grand Buffet Restuarnat - Burnaby: Accumulation of filth is so severe that food and utensils cannot be handled in a safe and sanitary manner, failure to protect food contamination, pest infestation. WOW. These type of restuarants end up in the news down here for getting someone sick.

Full Garden Seafood - Burnaby - cockroach infestation

Tin Lizzy Deli- Burnaby - rodent infestation.

Starbucks in Burnaby: no hot and cold water supply. Wow this is a shock usually all the chain resturants have perfect conditions. Like for example all the chain restuarants in the US usually have a grade A. Although I did run into a Taco Bell once that was a B. But it gained it back.

Diamond Sweets Resturants and Ltd in Delta: reason: car crashed into building. LOL, but sad.

BTW Lise, which one was your favourite dim sum restuarant on the list?

Yeah, I know SD. About the Grand Buffet. I couldn't believe the reason behind the closure. Why the restaurant is still open remains a mystery to me.

My fav. is Big Lai on Kingsway. They have some of the largest dumplings for $2.50. Quite a bargain when you think about it. The only bad part is obviously the rodent infestation. Icky.

ouch that place had two boxes for reason of closure instead of one. Another thing, how come all the places that were closed were in burnaby?
Title: Re: Restaurant Closures in BC
Post by: Lise on Jul 15 06 01:55
That's just the Fraser valley region alone. I also included the Vancouver, Richmond ones as well in a separate link.

You'll note that most of the restaurants are Chinese owned. Not that I'm against this but I feel most Chinese restaurants are notorious for not complying with the health code set by BC government. There should be stricter penalties issued to all the restaurants, not just the Chinese owned.

seems to be a shortage of hot water in vancouver. i dont get that, cant they just go to the hot water tank and turn up the little knob?

You've got a great new avatar, Lise.  Very nice indeed!  I don't think I want to go to restaurants any more after seeing that.  And I've always loved treating myself to Chinese food when I had the chance.  But that is too gross.  I'd always be wondering if the place I chose was going to be closed down for some reason.
Title: Re: Restaurant Closures in BC
Post by: Sportsdude on Jul 15 06 02:37
Very true Kitten. I think thats why more people end up going to those big chain restuarants because you know what you'll get there. Mom and Pop places are as usual hit or miss.
Title: Re: Restaurant Closures in BC
Post by: kitten on Jul 15 06 02:39
I think the trouble with chain restaurants is that they are completely predictable.  No interesting changes on the menu to tempt you.  I might as well stay home and cook, because everything these places offer I could do myself with much less cost.
Title: Re: Restaurant Closures in BC
Post by: Sportsdude on Jul 15 06 02:43
Exactly. How does BC or Canada rate there restuarants. Do they do the letter system like the U.S.

Where you have A for excellent B for good and so on. And for the record I've only seen a B place once and that was a taco bell. If someone gets a C I think they are shut down until they fix the problem.

Hey, if you wanna go to a good, clean Chinese restaurant, go to the Chili Pepper House at Rupert & Kingsway in Van. Sino-Indian fusion, and it really works. They've built up a good name in the area based on trust and continuous good standards. Some interesting menu items. Go for the Bhajia and/or the chicken kebabs, vegie pakoras (best anywhere), etc., etc.

Post by: kitten on Jul 15 06 07:30
That sounds interesting, weird al.  I should drive into town one of these days and check it out.  As long as it's a nice clean place and not too pricey.  I do love veggie pakoras.

Closure because "No cold or hot water supply"

Forget the water for cooking.........what did they use for flushing the toilets or hand washing after going?

Their vegie pakoras are the best I've ever had anywhere. Watch out for the Hot & Sour soup - hotter than the hinges of hell! Lots of vegie dishes, and all the usual Chinese cuisine. No pork. The owners (Chinese) are from Calcutta and have also done this gig in Sweden and Germany. Edward (now at the Surrey location) is fluent in Swedish, and Paul (Van. location) is fluent in German. They also speak Hindi. The place is clean, and in no way overpriced. Thier spicy deep-fried tofu is also a total winner. I've been going there almost 3 years now and never had a bad experience. They know me well (but not as weird al).

Much to my regret, I'll have to pass on the hot stuff.  I love hot spices but my tummy no longer approves of them.(//vny!://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Sad/2.gif)

I think I've been to the Chilli Pepper House before. Can't quite remember..... it's a fusion between Indian and Chinese, right? I mean, I love spices and all but the dishes were not to my taste. Dunno. I guess my palate can't quite handle the fusion. Not too bad but then again I'm not a real fan of fusion. I prefer traditional dishes.

I went to the local indi-paki store down the street from me and I got looks like I was the first white guy ever to walk into the store. Everyone stopped and stared. Bought some rice, hottest stuff I'd ever tasted.

Post by: Lise on Jul 16 06 07:47
Was it good though, SD?

Here's a funny story about a restaurant closure in Richmond a while ago. This guy I know went to a place called Foodie Goodie in Richmond with a friend. They ate there then as they walked out, this dude walked in with a pest tank on his back. Written on the tank was "RODENT CONTROL".

Needless to say they both didn't feel too good afterwards. The restaurant has never since open.

It was on of those rice packs that don't need water. You just heat it up in microwave. I've got another pack in the pantry. I've put the pack in the "if someone is drunk and is hungry feed him this catagory". Did I like it? No not really it was so hot and spicey that I couldn't take 10 bites of it. I think the stuff burned my nose it was that spicey. Curry man, spiciest stuff I've ever seen.  But the local mexican hot sauce to shame. It was like eating the super hot green stuff that comes with sushi.

Post by: Lise on Jul 16 06 07:58
Ah, SD.... you're a wuss. *hehe* Can't handle your spices? I love spices, the spicer the better. If it don't make you sweat, it ain't good nuff.

Next time, eat your rice with milk. The milk should be able to neutralize the spice.

There used to be a Food Goody on Kingsway that closed dow a few years ago.  I wonder if it was for the same reason.

Heck, I never buy stuff like that, SD. Those are high in carbs and sodium.

Dunno about that, kitten. It could be close for the same reason.
Title: Re: Restaurant Closures in BC
Post by: kitten on Jul 16 06 09:11
That's another reason I don't eat out too often.  Most places put way too much salt in their food.

Sodium yes:

The box says it has 200mg of Sodium in it or 25% of the serving

but calories wise 100 cal

its got rice, onion, potato, redgram dal, tamarind, tomato, salt, coconut, coriander, refined veg. oil, jaggery, cumin, red chilli, coriander leaves, fenugreek, curry leaves, mustard and cinamon.

Ministry of Defence, Mysore, India

Why is the Ministry of Defence making food in India?

they have an email address also but not a website. funny.

Maybe it's not so strange at that.  I imagine the Ministry of Defence is used to keeping everything secret, including their food products.

I generally stay away from chinese restaurants.  Chinese food bores me and I generally feel sick after eating chinese food.  I know that they don't wash their vegetables properly and handle their meat.

SD, your rice pack is probably for the Indian army. Cook on site. Easy to cook, just add water, right? Sorta like Tang from NASA.

purelife, not like Chinese? No.... really. Wow. I love Chinese food. Can't get nuff of 'em.

I don't think there's a single Chinese restaurant out there that doesn't use MSG in their cooking, kingy. And yeah, you're right, it does make the food tastier but at a price.

The only thing that I like is dim sum and really expensive chinese food from real chinese restaurants but there aren't many around here and I can't afford to eat there.  Other than that, the restaurants and food court food SUCKS, imo.

Whenever I'm at the food court, I go for Indian food or Greek.

There isn't? Well someone's dropping the ball up there. Because whenever you enter a restaurant that you've never been to you can always look in the front of the main entrance door and it would eiter have a blue A or B or C in front of it. C restuarants are closed down, most or all restuarnts are A and like I've said I've only seen one B and they kinda deserved it but now its an A again.
Title: Re: Restaurant Closures in BC

Indian food isn't really big around here as I'd like it to be. There are some greek places but this town is mainly Italian (the famous "The Hill" or now mexican in the suburbs) all the german restaurants are gone for some reason which is a shock since the cities identity has always been a italian/german one.  Chinese food is big only because as I've said before the integration or getting along if you will of North St. Louis Vietnamese and Chinese people with the african american community. (except in the suburbs where that kind of getting along doesn't really exist). I think I've said before that the only other race in this town thats been tried as bad as black community is the vietnamese/chinese group that lived in north st. louis. But then again thats north st. louis and not very many people care about the growing urban slum there.

SD, I don't think this is even adopted in all municipalities in the US.  The only city in this area I know that have adopted this system is San Francisco.

I've never heard of a health standard A,B,C,D set for Canadian restaurants. I don't even know what the policies are with regard to this.

purelife - there are tons of affordable Chinese restaurants around that are kind to your budget. Try Hons on Robson St or Chinatown. The foodcourt at the Crystal Mall is not too bad either. Though you may scorn at the food court meal, the ones created at the Crystal Mall is really good if you know what to order.

Chinese food at western food courts are the pits. I don't really like them either and they're so bad for my diabetes. I believe Chinese food should be cook then and there, not sit in some hot lamp for eons.

Well when I finally make the trek up there some time next year you can show me what real chinese food is like. Because here one of my favourite places (really the only place I've had anything asian) is a buffet that the local papers here called Disney World meets buffet meets asian food.
