WHAT A SHOCKER!!!! I couldn't believe my eyes when I read this.
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — A 9-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in the western [A href="jvascript:siteSearch('Amazon jungle');"]Amazon jungle[/A], a pregnancy that authorities say may have been the result of rape, the National Indian Bureau said Friday. The girl was found in the jungle in April by laborers working on a natural gas pipeline from the Coari oil fields to Manaus, a city of 1.5 million people 1,800 miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro, said the bureau, known as Funai.
She was taken to Manaus and went into labor on Thursday. The baby, weighing 4.9 pounds, was delivered by [A href="jvascript:siteSearch('Caesarean section');"]Caesarean section[/A] and reportedly was in good health, said Daniele Santos of the Funai press office.
The mother, of the Apurina tribe, has refused to speak, and the identity of the infant's father was unknown, Santos said.

"In some cultures it's natural for girls to have sexual relations after their first menstruation, but now we have to study if that was the case here, if their culture permits this," Santos said.
Mother and child were to remain under medical care for a month and then return to their village in Jaturana, about 75 miles from Manaus, she said.
"It's very rare, and we have to investigate whether it was rape," said Marina Mota, a press officer for the [A href="jvascript:siteSearch('National Health Foundation');"]National Health Foundation[/A]. "The tribe wasn't that isolated, and had a lot of contact" with outside cultures.
National census figures show Brazil has about 700,000 Indians. Most of them live in the northern Amazon rain forest.

The Sun had a huge article and it turned into a scandal over the 'three pregnant teen sisters'. One got pregnant at 10, the other 12 and 14. Or was it 12,14,16, I don't know but it turned out the british public was helping them by paying 35,000 pounds a year through welfare taxes to them and only them.
35,000 pounds is almost 70,000 U.S. dollars.
i had no idea girls were able to reproduce at that age.
was she really 9?.........you got to take into consideration the natives do not keep birth records.
I think you're able to reproduce as soon as your period comes in. Some girls start early. It's just sick to hear when a girl as young as 9 gave birth. She's only a child for crying out loud.
She's only 9 years old?!?! ... that's not good... is that a new record??
No, the record was a five year old girl.

She could be a grandmother before she reaches the legal age to get married!
There has to be someone in the world sadly who is a grandmother at or near her early to mid twenties. Cultures are differnt I guess.
It's very sad that this happens all around the world. And this only one that we've heard of, imagine how many don't make the news and go un-noticed.

That's true, Sportsdude, and we're arrogant to presume that one is superior to an another
Here's that story I was talking about in the UK over the three sisters who had kids at 12,14,16.

I can't believe that they get money but it's nice to know that they get support but that much? WOW!
Oh yeah, my cousins would be living the dream so to speak if they had there kids in the UK. I'm all for stuff like this (helping out the single mothers) but as with anything it can be abused.
