You can see how many people are online, but to see what they're doing you need to be logged in:

If you're not logged in, all of them will appear as "Guest" to you. If you were logged in you would see the registered user names of anyone logged in (and what they're doing) in that list.
Anyone that isn't logged in appears in the list as a Guest, whether you're logged in or not.

Actually, that's not so. If I come onine to DS as a 'guest' (without logging in) I DO see how many other guests are presently on-line AND which 'users' (registered members) are there also. I can STILL see the info of what threads they are presently viewing etc. The only things you don't have the options to do is, the 'bless/smite' , 'indicater' of new posts and the TIMES they were posted at. And of course there's alway the popular concept of knowing WHO you're REALLY talking to. At least that's what I've observed.
