With any luck, you won't have to worry about seeing this place in person. (//forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/14.gif)

An [a href="vny!://www.sfbappa.org/Awards/picturestory/picstory28.ex2.html"]eye-popping set of photos[/a] taken at Pelican Bay Prison, home to some of the "worst of the worst" criminals in the world.

Pelican Bay Prison Guard George Sherman carries a rifle in the control room    of the ultra-maximum Security Housing Unit, known as the SHU, whenever a guard    enters one of the groups of 10 cells.

The collection of confiscated knives, spears and points grows daily at Pelican    Bay State Prison. Prisoners, alone in their cells 23-hours a day, have plenty    of time to contruct weapons from rudimentary materials.

You do lead us down some very interesting paths, TehBorken.  I don't always respond, but I enjoy seeing where you go in your searches.  Hats off to you for keeping things interesting!

Good point about the free time. One prisoner in, I think it was the Marion Illinois supermax, fashioned a key to his cell based on his memory of what the key looked like. I forget where I read this, maybe in The Fox is Crazy Too.

  Found it:

At 54, Del Raine is serving 199 years for killing two policenen in a Chicago bank robbery and a additional ten years for his escape attempts. He is regarded as a locksmithing genius able to look at a key for only a moment and then duplicate it using plastic cups, toothbrushes and other simple materials available in his cell. "A year ago, we turned up copies of the big keys used in our security doors" Clark says. "They were perfect. They were made of plastic, but they would have worked." They had DeifRaine's trademark. But they were found in another prisoner's cell so we couldn't officially pin them on Del Raine. At other times, though, keys have been found in Del Raine's possession."
