Those were the kind that actually could damage your brain. It was like putting a mobile base station next to your head.

I used to have a cell phone, way back when they first came out.  Then I didn't have one for a few years.  A couple years back, hubby dicided to get me another.  I said please don't bother.  I've used it twice.  If I'm shopping, I won't answer if it rings.....if I'm driving, I won't answer when it rings......so if I'm not shopping or driving, I'm probably at work or at home.  Both places have a phone.  [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/haushalt/h052.gif" border=0]

 Lise's definition covers it, but:

A Blackberry is a smartphone, but not all smartphones are Blackberrys. Blackberry is a specific piece of equipment, or the technology/software/service related to the company who makes that equipment.

You can have smartphones that do what Blackberry does without being a Blackberry. There are different ways to send and retrieve e-mail, and some companies are making a killing with their Blackberry charges.

T-Mobile operates its own networks, which were set up when T-Mobile was Deutsche Telekom, and gives you an option between the Blackberry system and their own.

Here's the real killer:  in order to take advantage of all of this crap, you have to sign on to two plans. In otherwords, it's like having two bloody phones, because you have to choose a plan to talk to people, and a plan to use the e-mail and web and other fun stuff. The companies justify this by coyly suggesting that you are going to use this thing instead of your computer, and therefore it's just like paying for your online access in addition to the phone service...  ....   .....  .... Thieving bastards.

The reality is that all phone companies realize that it is becoming increasingly impossible to get money for actually talking to people, so they are taking it out of the data services. (Yes, you can now use Skype to make calls on some smartphones,)

But why not simply admit that the pay-to-talk era is over, and just charge people what you would to use your general services? What seems disingenuous is the "double-dip while we can get it" approach that all companies are currently taking.

I fully admit my phone is probably smarter than me. Must be as whenever I use it, it keeps beeping at me when I try to do something. I have all the gidgets on it.. but all I use it for is a phone book and to call people... isnt that what a phone is for???

Yep. I think that's the term they use in jolly Old England. It's the Blackberry here.

  Definition:

A smartphone or sphone is any electronic [A title="Handheld device" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handheld_device"]handheld device[/A] that integrates the functionality of a [A title="Mobile phone" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone"]mobile phone[/A], [A title="Personal digital assistant" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_digital_assistant"]personal digital assistant[/A] (PDA) or other [A title="Information appliance" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_appliance"]information appliance[/A]. This is often achieved by adding [A title=Telephone href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone"]telephone[/A] functions to an existing PDA (PDA Phone) or putting "smart" capabilities, such as PDA functions, into a mobile phone. A key feature of a smartphone is that additional native applications can be installed on the device. The applications can be developed by the manufacturer of the handheld device, by the operator or by any other third-party software developer. "Smart" functionality includes any additional interface including a [A title=QWERTY href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY"]QWERTY[/A] board, a [A title="Touch screen" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_screen"]touch screen[/A], or even just secure access to company mail, such as is provided by a [A title=BlackBerry href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlackBerry"]BlackBerry[/A]

Well, I'm glad you've got such a positive attitude about it, Trollio. Should have more men like you.

Trollina is the more "endowed" between us, to the point of considering reduction. She's not ridiculously big, but big enough for them to be more of a pain than it's worth. Happy women are far more important than endowed ones, so I support whatever she wants to do.

I do not favour reduction for myself.

ANYWAY, regarding phones... people seem to think this Dash phone is the best all-round phone. They never make one that works for everyone, and it's practically a part-time job finding out which one is the best one for you.

Maybe we should ask Trollina instead. I'm sure she can vouch for your 'bigness'.

As for that Smartphone of your choice, I like it. Looks cool. I would totally buy.

Size does not matter to me, but it can be fun. I got lucky. On both sides.

Oooh. Does size matter to you? *innocent batter of eyelids*

I'm still in the dinosaur age, still depending on my itty bitty small cellphone with no camera. *sob*

Mobile. I like it. I haven't heard the term since leaving Australia.

I am about to buy a new smartphone to replace the "old" mobile phone I now have. What types of phones do people here have, and if you have a smartphone, which one do you have and what do you think of it? My likely choice is
