Title: Darvaz.. The door to Hell
Post by: Russ on Apr 01 08 06:31
[A href="http://englishrussia.com/?p=1830#more-1830"]http://englishrussia.com/?p=1830#more-1830[/A]

This place in Uzbekistan is called by locals "The Door to Hell". It is situated near the small town of Darvaz. The story of this place lasts already for 35 years. Once the geologists were drilling for gas. Then suddenly during the drilling they have found an underground cavern, it was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground. None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it's burning, already for 35 years without any pause. Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be infinite there.

Awesome photo.
I believe there is one of those near Red Deer, but it's more underground- so not much to look at on the surface.

LM - there's a gas seep near black diamond, ab where a small portion of the hillside burns constantly (perhaps for 1,000's of years)

Hey! Vancouver Island needs one of those for camping.

You would never have to worry about your campfire being put out by rain.

See....I like to think of my house as a big wooden tent.  This is camping at its best to me.  I've got a shower, a bar-b...a warm bed and a toilet and it costs nothing in gas to get here.  It just doesn't get any better. (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

You've been camping in the wrong spots - you open up your tent and look over a field of alpine flowers to the snow capped peaks and you breath in the UBER FRESH air, listen to the birds chirping ... and you pause for a long moment ... to drink it all in.  Sure you'll have to siht in a snow bank in a bit but it's all worth it.

Au contraire.....it's a pretty not bad camping spot.  I open up my 'tent' and look over a forest of green, and I breath in some fairly decent air, listen to the birds chirping and the woodpeckers destroying my retaining wall....oh wait....strike that last one. [/DIV]

Not saying anything bad about your air or wall -

Part of the camping experience the aforementioned - part of it is learning to appreciate the things we take for granted - hot shower - warm / dry bed - stove - electricity - etc....

I was having a tough time loading your retaining wall pic - sooooo wood peckers destroed your wall?  How dare they????[/DIV]

    That's so true Van Guy.

I remember the days we used to backpack into the wilderness for 3 weeks or so.....and then that first bath when you get home....with warm water and bubbles and fresh towels. Heavenly.  I try to not take any of these luxuries for granted....and they are luxuries.[/DIV]

Have you ever been to Prince George?  The town mascot is Mr PG man (no I'm not making this up - see below)  he's this statue at the outskirts of town.  He used to be made out of wood.  Unfortunately too many rednecks with chainsaws and plenty of beer live in PG ... i think you can figure out what happened to the poor guy.  Sooooooooo.... PG not wanting to be defeated made a new Mr. PG Man this time out of STEEL painted to look like wood. ... sooooooo what I'm getting at it why don't you make your new retaining wall out of steel painted as wood and give those dirty peckers a little surprise.

http://wikitravel.org/en/Prince_George
Mr. PG
: A large statue of man with tree stumps for legs and arms, around 10 metres high, has to be seen to be believed. Mr. PG stands near the tourist information centre at the intersection of Highway 16 and Highway 97. Mr. PG has been successfully burned down by repeated arson attempts, and is now constructed of fire-proof metal.

Better yet, P.C. should build a REPLICA of Mr P.G.
It can be Vancouver Island's newest tourist attraction.  Sell tickets!  Sell donuts to the busloads of tourists!

Not sure what a bucket list is... (//richedit/smileys/8.gif)
but sure everyone loves a rock walkway - as long as it's real rock not that painted steel made to look like rock.
If you visit the worst cities section - you'll find PG showing up quite a lot - for good reason.

The Bucket List.....

Two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die.

So what's #1 on your list??

I actually crossed #1 off my list a couple years back.  To pat a dolphin.  Next would be a manatee.

I want to milk a cow too.  (I have simple needs) [img style="CURSOR: pointer" onclick=url(this.src); src="http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/liebe/g038.gif" border=0]

Cool!  So you knock on the door of the farmhouse and explain to the farmer about the Bucket List, and your list, and about patting the dolphin...and then ask if you can milk the cow.

Fresh milk and some fresh meadow muffins for the garden.  I won't name it, because I'm sure Sawdust will see bar-b-cue written all over it.

LM hate to mow lawns - when we moved to Calgary (and could afford alawn) she wanted to get a goat - so she wouldn't have to.  I convinced her it was a bad idea.

I'm not entirely sure she is kidding about the whole cow thing ....

I once shot a nice fresh - steamy meadow muffin with a .22 cal rifle... not something I'm proud of ... but  ... when your 16 and armed - what the hell.
So the interesting part of this is that the bullet evacuated (all over my pants probably) a perfect cylindar right into the center ... it was remarkable how perfect the shape was.... thought I'd share ... probably not too many of you had ever shot a cow pie before.(//forums/richedit/smileys/4.gif)
