Ya, not a good idea!  What most likely happened is the buckshot ricocheted off the wheel and peppered him, which will happen with projectiles that consist of certain material formation and velocities...  I've been smacked with ricocheting birdshot fired from a 12 gauge, as well as a couple near misses with a ricocheting .22 LR round...  Yet a .223 FMJ round has virtually no risk of ricocheting in any of the 'tests' that I've administered, as it's a fairly high velocity round, and seems to fragment upon impact...

Oh well, sometimes gun safety needs to be learned the hard way!

Probably dropped the cigarette she bummed in her lap.  These things can happen!  I've dropped a lit cig in between my legs while driving before...  The damn thing'll roll down under your ass.  You've gotta move quick if you wanna nip that one in the bud...  

I am registered here, wyk!  Just for the record, on a personal level I do respect you as a poster...  

I'd say that I should give the old guns a cleaning, and welcome some of you guys out to an hour or two at the range...  Revolver, semi-auto, even a semi-auto assault style firearm...   You'd have some fun, even if you've never fired a pistol before!
There is no safer place that you could be, than at a range...  And the behaviour that's expected there of everyone is 100% professional...
