Title: Spring Cleanse - Dav 5 of 20
Post by: stretchedout on May 03 08 11:51
I already feel way better, and can't believe how much garbage I was eating and drinking before.  No longer.  I only buy fruit at the corner store now.  Sugar is white death.

Thanks!  It's a lot easier to lose weight when one's digestive system is working efficiently.  Herbal cleanses every spring to loose the winter weight gain.

I felt weak and had a headache at the start of my first cleanse.  But since then, it hasn't been too bad.
Be prepared to go to the bathroom a lot.

I always lose a lot of fluid and feel more energetic.

There are lots of commercial products, or you can do your own cleanse.

I use the Wild Rose 12 Day Detox (about $30)
  [a href="http://www.wrc.net/Store/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=400"]http://www.wrc.net/Store/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=400[/a]

A lot of people follow the Master Cleanse (free)
  [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Cleanse"]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Cleanse[/a]

I know a few people who do the Grapefruit/Olive Oil/Epsom Salt Cleanse (free)

Some cleanses can be potentially dangerous Michel.  The jury is still out on the benefits of cleansing.  Although there is no doubt people feel better, there is concern that along with 'flushing harmful' bacteria from the body....beneficial bacteria is also removed.

I've always wanted to give it a try, but I'm chicken.(http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/12.gif)

Interesting article.  That's a 'home-made' type of cleanse they are talking about on that link?

One interesting snip from that ...However to do so is unnecessary as the body is excellent at removing normal everyday toxins from itself through the lungs, kidneys, liver, and other eliminatory organs.

I also understand, that every time the body is deprived of normal food and nutritional intake, that the body goes into 'survival mode'.....burning less calories to ward off startvation....thus making it less efficient.

I don't know....I keep coming back to square one on deciding whether to do it.  Help !

I always think of Dave - he was a HEALTH NUT - been a vegetarian (no milk no eggs) for 15 years - grew wheat grass for a living ... he did a hardcore cleanse including some kind of a beverage that expanded 10 times to form a big glob of gelatenous "sandpaper" for the guts.  He told me in GORY detail of the contents of his toilet bowl (I'm talking he disected the contents)  even after being a hardcore veggie - some rather startling things came out of his bowel.  I can only imagine what would come out of a beer swilling, hard living, t-bone steak eating, omnivore like myself.  If you believe the literature the average northamerican male has about 3,000 pounds of undigested red meat hanging out.  Actually I made up the 3,000 pounds bit - but when I read it - I was shocked - horrified and disgusted.

Okay, so who doesn't know that Wikipedia is written by anyone?

The point of a cleanse isn't to loose weight, it is to rid the digestive system of all the caked on goodies that we have been indulging in for the last few months or years.

People who expect to loose weight by dieting should first do a cleanse.  It just makes a lot of sense to get your system cleaned out and efficient first.

Would you paint your car without riding the body of rust and without sanding and then priming first?  Bad analogy but you get the point.

I take six large herbal supplements prior to each meal for 20 days.  At day six my gut already feels way better.  I usually get a headache only on the first or second day.  During the cleanse I avoid alcohol, coffee, sugar, fried foods and mostly dairy and wheat.  But the first four for sure.  If one can't go without bread best to eat a bread made without yeast, and to eat sparingly.  Milk is a definite no, no.  But a little bit of cheese or yogart probably isn't too detrimental.

To add... it takes 21 days to develop a habit.  Imagine after 20 days or so how much discipline one would have developed for avoiding consuming crap.  I once said to a friend, referring to the $2 Big Mac, "how can you go wrong with that?"  He replied, "oh, you can go wrong with that!"  True, true.

 Good for you stretchedout!

I also started on a cleanse too... Day 1.  It's a colon, liver/kidney cleanse.  The pills look gawdawful and smell terrible too.  Thank gawd I don't have to chew those suckers.

LM - May I ask how often you had to run to the bathroom for those bowel movements?  (I gotta know...cuz I work at an office)

Well what about the Mayo Clinic?  Would their opinion lend more credibility ?   Proponents believe colon cleansing provides health benefits — by removing toxins from their bodies, and boosting their energy and their immune systems. But doctors take a different view.

Although doctors may recommend colon cleansing in preparation for a medical examination of the colon, most don't recommend colon cleansing for better health or to prevent disease. This is because:

[UL] [LI class=doublespace]It's unnecessary. Your colon doesn't require enemas or special diets or pills to eliminate waste material and bacteria. It does this naturally on its own. [LI class=doublespace]It may be harmful. Your colon absorbs water and sodium to maintain your body's fluid and electrolyte balance. Some colon-cleansing programs disrupt this balance, causing dehydration and salt depletion. Long-term or excessive cleansing programs can lead to problems such as anemia, malnutrition and heart failure. [/LI][/UL] [P class=doublespace][A href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/colon-cleansing/AN00065"]http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/colon-cleansing/AN00065[/A]

It's not really a big deal once you get used to it.
It's quick- meaning it takes no longer than your average pee.

The cleanse I do is for all internal organs.  It is "ancient chinese secret".  Look, western medicine takes decades to accept the thousands of years old eastern preventative practices.  Western medicine is all about treating a problem after the fact.  The Mayo clinic is the equivalent of the Vatican for western medicine.  Of course they find fault with these cleanses.  Meanwhile, chinese people following such practices live longer than us and stay thin.  Hmmm...  something to think about.

I use the Taio He Cleanse and the Parapak Cleanse from Nature's Sunshine.  Being doing it every spring for years and it makes my summers feel way better than the years prior.

The problem is the N.American diet.  Most of us have shit caked on our intestinal walls.  And most of us have parasites which are just waiting for you to have some more refined simple carbs.  And so what about peeing, it is the explosive bowel movements you have to prepare for.  Yes eating mostly fruits and veggies does it, but wow, when you include a herbal cleanse after a few days you suddenly feel immense relief in your gut.  Something good happens - the intestinal walls are cleaned.

If you still are doubtful and want futher clarification, go see a N.D.  They are far more qualified to answer questions on this topic than any M.D.

I agree with a great deal of what you're saying stretchedoubt. I didn't find the Mayo's comments to be particularly critical...they were more or less saying it wasn't necessary and could be harmful. (I would guess, especially for those who use it to drop 10 lbs regularly...to go to a function and look spiffy in their sexy little black dress)

I also agree with your thoughts on ancient medicine.  I personally have little faith in 'western' medicine.  I have little knowledge about 'cleansing'...but there has always been a nagging doubt that it is a sensible thing.

The closest I've come to any kind of cleanse, is that gawd awful cabbage, tomato, celery concoction....and frankly I DID feel better in the end (no pun intended)...but in the process, went through waves of shivers and shakes and borderline nausea (similar symptoms described by those who have done a 'real' cleanse).  Common sense suggests this can't be good....it's almost like shock.

Anyways, I find it interesting...and have no definite conclusions either way yet.
