Well, OK, thought I'd start a thread on this one and keep everyone posted. Or you keep me posted on those darn tainted tomatoes.

Tomato Salmonella Spreads To 17 States

CBS/ AP) [!-- sphereit start --]Federal officials hunted for the source of a 17-state salmonella outbreak linked to three types of raw tomatoes, while the list of supermarkets and restaurants yanking those varieties from shelves and menus grew.

McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Burger King, Kroger, Outback Steakhouse, Winn-Dixie and Taco Bell were among the companies that [A class=link onclick="return linkTo(this);" href="http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/07/health/main4161898.shtml"]voluntarily withdrew red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes[/A] unless they were grown in certain states and countries.

In addition, officials at the Los Angeles Unified School District - the nation's second largest - said Monday they have "indefinitely suspended" serving uncooked tomatoes.

The FDA is investigating the source of the outbreak, agency spokeswoman Kimberly Rawlings said. "We are working hard and fast on this one and hope to have something as quickly as possible," Rawlings said Monday.

Jaydee Hanson of the Center for Food Safety criticized the FDA's response to the outbreak. Hanson told CBS' The Early Show that the reason the search for the source has taken so long is that the FDA conducts fewer safety inspections.

The lack of oversight makes it "much more likely your food will be infected with something," Hanson said.

Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and homegrown tomatoes are likely not the source of the outbreak, federal officials said.

Right, my friend reminded me that we would get this in the mail pretty soon. Have any of you heard about this?

How do you get the Climate Action Dividend?

Starting in late June 2008, the dividend will be mailed automatically to every eligible adult who has filed either a 2006 or 2007 personal income tax return for British Columbia. [SPAN class=354595720-27052008]Parents whose children are registered for the Canada Child Tax Benefit will also receive a $100 payment for each child.[/SPAN]

Once the tax return is assessed, the dividend will be mailed automatically to the mailing address provided on the tax return.

Even if you or your spouse have little or no income to declare, the sooner each of you file your individual tax returns, the sooner you will each receive your one-time $100 dividend.

  B.C. severed feet mystery deepens
By Elianna Lev, THE CANADIAN PRESS
VANCOUVER -- The Ogopogo. The Bermuda Triangle. Mermaids.

The ocean has always been a trove of mysteries, most of which remain unsolved.

The latest head-scratcher that's leaving everyone from police to oceanographers baffled are a series of sneaker-clad right feet that have washed up on shorelines along islands in British Columbia.

There have been four in less than a year. All feet were wearing socks and shoes. Two of them were size 12.

Did anyone catch the 'Jem Gallery' on Broadway? Corner of Kingsway and Broadway. It has that HUGE graphic art of intercourse displayed at the front window?

Disgusting! I can't believe they would allow this to be displayed where kids can walk by. It's porn no matter how you dress it. UGH. I don't know why the city doesn't ask them to take it down.

Well, call me a prune but I do think some things are better left in the privacy of your own bedroom.

Just wondering what you all think about how the Texan government is treating the whole situation in San Angelos.

On one hand, yes, I agree they should step in and take away the children especially if you suspect them of being abused. On the other hand, I don't think they should be separated from their mothers or siblings.

It's just a sad, sad situation here.

[DIV class=inside-copy]SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) — Dozens of mothers from a polygamist retreat were bused away from their children Thursday, their legal efforts to stay united rejected as Texas officials sort out their massive custody case.

[P class=inside-copy]Two buses took the women from the San Angelo Coliseum, where they had been temporarily housed with their children. Texas officials were preparing to move the last of more than 400 children to group homes, shelters and residences, some hundreds of miles away, over the next few days.

[A href="http://www.valcent.net/s/Home.asp"]Valcent Products[/A] are looking to algae as a source of renewable bio-fuel for the future. The El Paso, Texas based firm joined forces with Canadian alternative fuel company [A href="http://www.globalgreensolutionsinc.com/s/Home.asp"]Global Green Solutions[/A] to patent a revolutionary algae growing system.

The Vertigro patented technology grows the algae in hanging and rotating plastic bags, removing the plant from grimy ponds. As Glen Kertz, CEO of Valcent , [A href="http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TECH/science/04/01/algae.oil/?imw=Y&iref=mpstoryemail"]told CNN[/A] this week:

"By going vertical, you can get a lot more surface area to expose cells to the sunlight. It keeps the algae hanging in the sunlight just long enough to pick up the solar energy they need to produce, to go through photosynthesis."

So, it's come to this. No more analog signals for your television in Feb next year. That means, you'll have to get a box to convert analog to digital for older tv sets Otherwise, you'll just have to chuck out the old telly and buy a new one.

I can't believe the bill passed. It should be up to the consumer whether they want to get digital or analog. Can you believe the amount of old tv that will end up in the landfill? And they say we're not doing enough for the environment. Sheesh.

Anyways, I brought this up before but now it seems it'll be reality in 2009. That's next year!
Analog TV broadcasts to end by 2009

Broadcasters get firm date for all-digital transition from Congress
[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]WASHINGTON - It's still three years away, but there now is a firm date for the transition to all-digital television — the biggest change in the industry since color TV.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]Legislation passed by the Senate on Wednesday would require broadcasters to end their traditional analog transmissions by Feb. 17, 2009, and send their signals digitally. Such technology promises super-sharp pictures and better sound.

[P class=textBodyBlack][SPAN id=byLine][/SPAN]The plan also would allocate as much as $1.5 billion for a "converter box" program to help people with older, analog TV sets that would lose their signal in the digital era. Consumer advocates say that is not enough money.

I realized I'm a tad late here but I just wanted to say... rest in peace, Mr. Heston. He was awesome in Ben Hur, Mosses and Planet of the Apes. Though I don't share his opinion when it comes to guns, I think he's one of the greatest actors in a long time.

[A title="" href="http://movies.nytimes.com/person/94233/Charlton-Heston?inline=nyt-per"]Charlton Heston[/A], who appeared in some 100 films in his 60-year acting career but who is remembered chiefly for his monumental, jut-jawed portrayals of Moses, Ben-Hur and Michelangelo, died Saturday night at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 84.

His death was confirmed by a spokesman for the family, Bill Powers, who did not specify a cause. [SPAN class=bold][/SPAN]In August 2002, Mr. Heston announced that he had received a diagnosis of neurological symptoms "consistent with Alzheimer's disease."

"I'm neither giving up nor giving in," he said.

Every actor dreams of a breakthrough role, the part that stamps him in the public memory, and Mr. Heston's life changed forever when he caught the eye of the director [A title="" href="http://movies.nytimes.com/person/87147/Cecil-B-DeMille?inline=nyt-per"]Cecil B. DeMille[/A]. DeMille, who was planning his next biblical spectacular, [A href="http://movies.nytimes.com/gst/movies/titlelist.html?v_idlist=49007;287596;130439;391808;431924;119705;429779;352944;432038;372929;432045;432044;432039;174226;431923;432043;49010;430623&inline=nyt_ttl"]"The Ten Commandments,"[/A] looked at the young, physically imposing Mr. Heston and saw his Moses.

I'm just wondering what would you ladies do about a guy who's making inappropriate comments to you and your fellow co-workers? For example, this guy that I know, (we'll call him Mr. Smith) comes around to our station frequently because he likes one of our co-worker a lot. Actually, you could say anyone that wears a skirt will attract his attention.

The reason why I'm truly uncomfortable with this guy is because he:

  a) tells us dirty jokes that are highly offensive and NOT FUNNY

b) tells that co-worker that he hasn't been laid in ages, not since his wife got sick

c) asks my friend if she got something something last night (and using his fingers - I'll leave you to figure out what he did)

d) asks me if I'm tired because my hubby kept me up last night

WTH? I'm so uncomfortable with this guy that I keep my distance even though he tries to be friendly. I know he's generally a good person but there are times when I felt like telling him to stop thinking with his ****.

Well.... y'know what I mean. Penny for your thoughts?

Anyone catch the CBC documentary on the Heart and Stroke Foundation last night? Very interesting. Apparenlty they do not really check that the food items that wear their logo. Companies PAY the Heart and Stroke Foundation to have their logos on their packaging and in doing so, tries to trick consumers into buying their products.

Unbelievable. I thought the H&S had better standards than that. Bottom line, read the labels well and don't trust what you see.
Hyping Health

Does the health check logo hype health or sell food?
You've seen the Health Check logo. It's the friendly red checkmark that appears on nearly 1,500 packaged food products in this country, representing the approval of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. If a product bears the logo, that means Heart and Stroke has evaluated it and concluded it complies with their criteria, which is based on the recommendations of Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating.

So. Does the logo mean it's the healthiest choice? The answer is a little complicated. As Wendy Mesley reports, it turns out that some of Heart and Stroke's Health Check products don't get top marks in other food-rating systems.

..... without attracting scumbags or giving the wrong signals?

Not that I do it, of course. *cough cough*  Is being friendly to the opposite sex giving off the wrong signal?

I was.... thinking the other day, this guy started talking to me. I mean, I initiated being friendly with him because I'm just that type of person. I like saying 'hi' and 'how are you' to everyone I met. Or smile. I asked this dude about his day and how he liked being here. Innocent right?

On Tues he waited for everyone to go then approached me to talk about Easter and what not. I just KNEW he was interested in me. You can see it. It's so damn sweet and lovely but I felt so bad. Like I haven't said anything so I kinda had to let him off gently.

  I talked about my kids.

Then I saw his face fell. OMG. I feel so so so so bad and small. He excused himself, beat a hasty retreat. He was so sweet and gentle that it made re-think that perhaps I must have been flirting too much??? Perhaps there's a consequence to one's actions afterall?? But how can being friendly and asking about your day and so forth be considered flirting? *confused*

Maybe next time I should just shaddap and not talk. *puts band-aid on mouth*

I was talking to my female co-worker the other day. She's single and is adamant that men in Vancouver are cowards because they won't approach her. I told her, why not just approach the guys instead but she's a firm believer that the men should make the first move. "Call me old fashion," She said to me.

I was just wondering, do you think in this day and age, the guy should be the one to make the first move? If the woman do it, would men think differently about her?
