Avocado consumption has been linked to increased rates of pregancy and violent crime. Why is that?
This question has been bothering me so much, I nearly crashed my 18-wheeler into a ditch.
I have nothing to add except that I LOVE avocados....mmmm....yummy...especially in salads or mixed with cottage cheese
I tried hard, but never could develop a liking for avocados. Considering the calories in them, maybe it's just as well!
True, it's extremely high in fat, moreso than a handful of cashews or peanuts but they are the best fat out there.
I'm sure they're healthy, but I'll still pass.
i like them in cali rolls.
Avacadoes contain the good fats and more ppl should eat them. Like eggs, they can boost your good cholesterol but must be eaten in moderation.
I have no problems with these delicious fruits. I love them in my california rolls, salads or just eating them as is.
[P class=sthd1green]Benefits of [SPAN class=sthdorange]Avocado[/SPAN]
Considered to be an almost complete food – so much so that in certain parts of the world babies are weaned using mashed avocado. Native to Central America and has been cultivated for thousands of years, they are rich in potassium and vitamin A. Avocado is also used traditionally to heal skin problems. The pulp is also believed to be both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Precaution: Do not eat avocados or take any products containing avocados if you are using the antidepressant monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI). Avoid eating large amounts of avocado if you'd like to lose weight, because they are high in calories.
Benefits of Avocado:
1. Avocado has been used traditionally to help people with sexual problems.
2. Great antioxidant and can be used for skin disorders
3. Avocado will aid healing for people suffering from digestive and circulatory problems
4. Another benefit of avocado for the skin where avocado paste can be applied to rashes and rough skin to make it smoother.
5. The brighter the fruit, the more beta-carotene (the substance that helps to prevent cancer) your avocado contains.

I bet no one drink their avocados like I do (yet)... with coffee syrup and ice...

Believe it or not I don't think I can remember eating an avocado. When I think of green stuff, I think of guacamole because I frequent the mexican cantinas.
Hey Orca, I have tried drinking avacado in a Vietnamese cafe. It was...... thick. Too thick for my liking.
* oh ah..... sounds dirty........................*
oye Lise is thinking dirty thoughts again.... (http://discoverseattle.net/forums/richedit/smileys/Happy/4.gif)
Umm, sportsdude, you have been eating avocado. I'm not sure if you're aware of it or not but guacamole's main ingredient is avocado.
it's true, researchers have found an enzyme in avocados that stimulates a response region in the brain linked to fight or flight.
eat too many of these things pretty soon you could be seriously psychotic.
there was a case in boston last year.a guy ate 15 in a row...next thing he is screaming and ranting on the street at people.
watch out.
So I can attribute my non-violent nature to the fact that I don't eat avocados in any form, including guacamole.
other foods that have a similar effect:
lima beans
popcorn
yellow corn
rye
squash
apples
Oops! Those are on my list of edibles, so perhaps I should develop a small temper.

[hr style="width: 100%; height: 2px;"]I think that if we eat in moderation, we'll be fine. The most that I would have in a row is 2.
avacados are also known as butter pears.....eating by itself is like eating a stick of butter
Mmmmm avocados. Yum. They absolutely have to be buttery ripe....a little salt and pepper....perfection. Heaven would be throwing it between a couple slices of earthy black bread with some shrimp, cream cheese and alfalfa sprouts, OMG !!!!!
Well, I do believe avacados have good fats so enjoy one every so often. They're not as buttery as say, eating a stick of butter as 49er pointed out.

One Avocado has 4 grams of protein, 15 gms carbohydrate and 31 grams of fat. So avocados are mostly fat. However, it is a good fat because avocados contain [A href="http://www.dietitian.com/fattyaci.html"]monounsaturated fat [/A](19 gms in 1 avocado) like olive oil and peanut oil.
So choose avocados like you would any other fat source. If you choose to eat 1/2 avocado per day, you are eating 3 fat servings ([A href="http://www.dietitian.com/diabexch.html"]diabetic exchanges[/A]) which should fit in a healthy eating plan. Or you could compare avocados to the [A href="http://www.dietitian.com/foodguid.html"]Food Guide Pyramid[/A] where 1 medium avocado is a serving of fruit. Hope this isn't confusing, but depending on how you keep track of your food intake (diabetic exchanges or the food guide pyramid), avocados are one of those foods that could be in either group. I would choose the fat group since fat is the predominant nutrient.

I'd have to say, I never check a graph or chart or a guide to decide what I should eat.....nor do I ever want to get to that point. . I trust my own instincts over scientists, who continually retract their findings every few months. What was good for you a few months ago, has now been found to cause tantrums in white mice. (alright, I made that one up)
If I ever decided to eat all the daily requirements on the Canada Food Guide, I'm sure I'd be 200 lbs. inside of a year. I know what's good for me, and I know what's bad for me and I choose not to sweat it, if I choose something that's 'not good for me' now and then. My complexion, my waistline and my energy level are what I use as my 'guide'......and so far it works OK.
Well, the Canadian Food Guide is what it is.... just a guide with recommendations. It doesn't fit everybody but you can modify it so it suits your lifestyle and dietary habits. The best thing to do is to follow your common sense - if it looks big and fatty, cut down your servings. Add more greens whenever possible.
You can't always ignore the bad food - it's quite ok to indulge in ice cream or cookies every so often. The trick is to know when enough is enough.
My lifestyle has changed because my husband is diabetic and I have gestational diabetes. It wasn't easy, eating the choices recommended were bland to say the very least but gradually, you can change your eating habit for the better. Not only do you feel good about it at the end of the day but you'll live longer.
Im not a fan of avocado's by themselves. I actually dislike them like that. But in or mixed with something like california rolls or guacamole, I can deal with them.
Orca, where do you find them in a drink?
Russ, you should try any of the Vietnamese cafes. Some carry avacado milkshakes.
Really Lise? Thats interesting.. I will the next time I go to one of them. Thanks for the info!!
Im usually just buying the soup with beef in it to go when i hit a Vietnamese cafe.
